The Barons had a chance to get a big lift Saturday in their push for a playoff spot before leaving on a nine-game road trip.

But a rough second period proved to be too much for them to overcome, as Grand Rapids beat the Barons 5-2 in front of 4,970 at the Cox Center.

The Barons led 2-1 early in the second after Chris VandeVelde scored shorthanded at 3:20.

But things fell apart just before the midpoint of the period, when the Girffins scored two goals in less than a minute.

First, Doug Janik tied it at 9:10. Then Jamie Tardif put the Griffins ahead for good at 9:51, beating Martin Gerber.

The Barons begin the road trip Tuesday in Peoria.

They don't return home until April 1, with their final home game the next night.

Colin McDonald scored the Barons other goal, putting them up 1-0 with a power-play goal with less than five minutes to play in the first.

The goal was McDonald's 27th of the season. He entered the season having not scored more than 13 goals in any of his previous three professional seasons.

After going 10 games without a goal before breaking the slump March 4, McDonald has now scored three in the Barons last six games and in two consecutive.

VandeVelde has now scored in three consecutive games. His goal was his second shorthanded tally of the season. Liam Reddox, with four, is the only other Barons player with multiple shorthanded goals.
