Barons open home season with 10-1 rout of Texas

The Oklahoma City Barons returned the favor to the Texas Stars on Saturday night.

The Barons opened their second home season in the American Hockey League with a 10-1 blowout of the Stars in front of 5,554 at the Cox Center.

Six days earlier in the season-opener for both teams, the Barons were on the other end, getting blown out 7-0 by the Stars in Cedar Park, Texas.

“I've never seen something like that,” Barons forward Ryan Keller said after Oklahoma City improved to 2-1-0. “It's a really strange game.”

Keller had two goals and two assists.

The game was a record-setter for the Barons, who entered the AHL last season as an affiliate of the Edmonton Oilers.

The Barons set team high for goals, margin of victory, goals in a period (6 in the second), consecutive goals and points (28). Antti Tyrvainen and Triston Grant were each plus-4 to set a team record.

Barons coach Todd Nelson said Friday's 3-2 win at San Antonio gave his team a charge that carried over to Saturday night's home opener.

“We're a group that's trying to come together. We're young, but I think last night's game was a hard-fought battle, winning 3-2 in somebody else's building,” Nelson said. “I think the guys kind of rode that win last night and carried it into tonight.”

Last season, the Barons started slow at home. They did not score more than a single goal in a game until their fourth contest at the Cox Center.
