Barry Switzer, one of the greatest football storytellers alive, shares his thoughts on Marcus Dupree, hiding Billy Sims, Michael Sam, Troy Aikman, and playing the 49ers with Grantland.com.
Switzer told our Berry Tramel some of the same stories in our "Tales from the Trail" series. From the Grantland piece:
On Dupree: It was different from any other experience. He was the best that never was, without a doubt. When I saw him in high school, he was better than anyone I’d ever seen, and I’ve seen ’em all.
On Sam coming out: That to me is irrelevant. I’d rather have a gay guy that’s got game than a straight guy that ain’t got game.
On recruiting black athletes: People were recruiting the black athletes because of the quota. That’s bull****. I was doing it because it was the right thing to do and I wanted to recruit whoever gave us the best chance to win.
The interview was initially supposed to be a lead-up to National Signing Day, but Switzer and the inteviewer Richard Boadu, linked up following NSD and Switzer gave him 32 minutes and 42 seconds of great material.
