For Jessica Smith, winning one of BC Clark Jewelers' Mother's Day gifts means more than a shiny new pair of earrings.
Smith, 31, of Mustang, has been trying for five years to get pregnant. After losing 70 pounds, she vowed that this will be the year she becomes a mom. It was on her mind Saturday as she raced to the Yukon PetSmart, where she believed a jewelry gift had been randomly placed in the Oklahoma City jeweler's annual Pay It Momward promotion.
“I was praying,” she recalled Monday. “I said, ‘God, if you want me to be a mom this year, I ask that you set this gift aside for me.”
She had seen the hint posted on BC Clark's Facebook page and the ensuing comments that ruled out other PetSmart stores. Smith looked up and down the aisles and asked store employees to help her find it. A worker pointed her to the box, which was wrapped and topped with a bow. Inside was a pair of diamond hoop earrings.
Smith, who works as a counselor at Merry Heart Guidance Center in Moore, couldn't believe it.
“I never win anything. That gave me a lot of faith and encouragement,” she said.
For BC Clark Jewelers, feel-good stories such as Smith's are what is great about the giveaway, done for 10 days leading up to Mother's Day. Gifts worth $100 to $1,700 are randomly dropped in public places across the metro; the tag reads “To Mom: If you found this, it's yours ... Open it.”
“It's just one of those feel-good things,” said Coleman Clark, BC Clark president. “We're in a position in our community where people know us. We feel like the community has always supported us in a big way.”
Recipients are invited to share their stories, but they aren't obligated to. Clark said they can just keep the jewelry and wear it and enjoy it. If they aren't a mom, they can give it to one.
It's the fourth year BC Clark has done Pay It Momward. This year, the jeweler also is donating $2,500 to Infant Crisis Services.
