The 78th Masters will be played April 10-13. The following preview package will move Thursday, April 3, for use beginning Saturday, April 5 and thereafter:

GLF--MASTERS

The final round of the Masters will be all about a green jacket, not a red shirt. Tiger Woods will not be at Augusta National for the first time in 20 years because of back problems that led him to have surgery. But does that make it any easier to win a green jacket? Golf is going through a generational shift that could really be exposed at the first major championship of the year. Only one player from the top five in the world has won this year. The last 24 majors have been won by 21 players. The Masters long was known as having the fewest legitimate contenders. That's no longer the case. By Golf Writer Doug Ferguson. GLF--MASTERS-ROOKIE CLASS

Not since Fuzzy Zoeller birdied the 11th hole in a playoff and leapt into the air has anyone won the Masters in his first attempt. That was 35 years ago. And if the streak is ever going to end, this would be as good a year as any. The rookie class at Augusta National might be the strongest ever, from Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed to Victor Dubuisson and Jimmy Walker. Ten of the rookies are among the top 50 in the world ranking. Most already have thrived on a big stage. By Golf Writer Doug Ferguson. UPCOMING: 800 words, photos. Moving in advance for weekend use on Thursday, April 3.

GLF--MASTERS-17TH HOLE

Most players walking up the hill toward the 17th fairway at Augusta National can't help but notice the famous Eisenhower Tree — a loblolly pine, far enough from the tee to be a nuisance, sprawling at 65 feet and getting taller by the year. It was about the only feature that gave definition to perhaps the dullest hole on the back nine of the Masters. The tree was lost to an ice storm. Except for the historical significance, hardly anyone will miss it. By Golf Writer Doug Ferguson. UPCOMING: 800 words, photos. Moving in advance for weekend use on Thursday, April 3.
