Dec 9It’s time for all Sooners to issue a pledge.

But the stakes are not the same for Oklahoma and Florida, the teams coronated Sunday for college football’s two-team playoff, Jan. 8 in Miami.

Both chase the same carrot. A national championship and all that comes with it: Eternal adoration from a devoted fan base; untold riches in terms of salaries for coaches and plusher towels in the locker room; free doughnuts at several diners in the tri-county area.

The Sooners and Gators have the same to gain. But the Sooners have more on the line.

Win this game, and bye-bye goes all the aggravation of recent years and recent weeks.

Frankly, Oklahoma football has been a punching bag. Some of it self-inflicted.

OU’s bowl slump — four straight BCS bowl defeats, with a Holiday win thrown in to break up the monotony — has been a big bugaboo, and not just on the nation’s gazillion talk shows.

Bob Stoops himself has admitted the exasperation, telling his troops last year in Phoenix how tired he was of seeing his bowl record crawl at the bottom of ESPN. And Sooner fans are getting downright tired of it, too.

But the bowl slump is small spuds compared to the comic opera played out in the Big 12 South in November, when OU, Texas Tech and Texas forged an unbreakable three-way tie that resulted in the Sooners getting the BCS love and Texas getting the national media love.

Thus, the stakes in Miami: Win this game, and farewell not just to the bowl problem but all the babble about Texas. Beat Florida, and critics suddenly will toss laurel wreaths instead of barbs.

Lose this game, and it’s more than lost opportunity at a precious national title. Lose this game, and it’s even more than multiplication of the bowl malaise. Lose this game, and the Sooners will hear forever how they didn’t belong in the big game, and the outcry will come from more than Longhorns.

Even Stoops admits the presence of such story lines.

"Everything’s a factor,” Stoops said Sunday night. "You’re aware of what’s been said about our program.”

The Sooners’ two most recent trips to this national finals rodeo has resulted in more than defeats. Both times, the Sooners went amid a BCS controversy. Both times, OU failed to justify its inclusion. A 21-14 loss to LSU in which the Sooners played poorly; a 55-19 thrashing by Southern Cal that ranks as the most embarrassing game of the Stoops’ era, if not since statehood.

Now, questions bloom again. The only answer is victory.

Oklahoma-Florida is a high-reward game. For the Sooners, it’s also high-risk.

Really look at Florida's defense. They stopped John Parker Wison and he had 9 TD's to his 6 interceptions,,, the WHOLE season. This is not Florida's 2006 team. They were good. These guys are under sized compared to that team. Any team this year that could throw has given Florida fit's. look at their stats. What helped them is the SEC is awful on offense. This is role reversal of OU and the 2003 game. OU played a bunch of misfits posing as the Big 12 that year. Lastly, to re-emphasize my point, Florida is the team with the suspect secondary. There is alot of hype because of Florida's past years history, this Florida is not that Florida(2006). Lastly Julio Jones and Manuel Johnson were putting up similair stats before Manny got hurt. UMMM they couldn't stop one Julio Jones, how are they going to stop 4??

Stoops is a really good coach. It's kinda hard to get your team up for a meaningless exhibition game after resting for a month, you just cant keep any type of intensity for that long. I think his players will be ready to play this one. I do, however, expect Florida to win based on their Defense.

They saw that against Boise St. hopefully, they learned something. But this past game against Mizzou, the defense looked "different." The players were all talking to one another on the field, they were constantly shifting formations that made Chase hesitate a few times and they just seemed more like a "unit" rather than a box. Made me feel pretty good on that end of our team. Maybe V is on to something here....

To JOHN,DALLAS and ERIC,NY, get a life. OU is there and you aren't and it's just that simple. There are hundreds of schools who wish they were there, but are elsewhere, or have already turned in their uniforms. EVERY Big 12 supporter, Texans included, should be hoping we DESTROY Florida, after Tebow says he can't wait to face a 'big 12 defense', plus the fact that nationally, the SEC gets big props from everyone and the Big 12 is always the ugly stepsister lol...I propose on defense Stoops employ a 'spy' on Tebow. Keep one guy home to follow is every move on every play. Don't let that guy scramble, or it's deja vu the way McCoy scrambled to extend drives.

When Florida pounds the paper champs we'll see if he is anywhere to be found. Maybe ESPN can show up at his trailer with a twelve pack and a NASCAR hat and be able to coax him out of his drunken stupor for a quote or something.

Follow my logic on this. Once OU was elevated to national prominance by their superior playing and winning the Big 12 so handily, if only left a two horse race for second place in the Big 12. Is my logic good on this?

AFter OU won the Big 12 and was elevated to Number one and the BCS Bowl, it is only fair TT play in the Fiesta Bowl. In a two team race for second place how can you send the team that TT beat "head to head". I like that term, "head to head". Mack, the Texas nation, and all the ESPN talking heads used that term a billion times. So now why doesn't it apply to TT and Texas for the Fiesta Bowl??
craig, Oklahoma city - Dec 8, 2008 at 10:49 pm
I forgot to mention that just when I thought all the plane banners had died down, I looked up in the sky over Arrowhead at around 5:00PM and I will be darn if there wasn't another one!!
craig, Oklahoma city - Dec 8, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Hell, my parents are Texans. Not a bad bunch of people. I also rooted for Texas agains USC.

But...this year with Mack constantly politicking and the plane banners flying around, just became too much for me. TExas, did, in fact beat OU. That is a fact. It is also a fact that TT beat Texas. So, in my feeble mind, it seems TT should be playing in the Fiesta Bowl. Hey, they beat Texas head to head...

I hate to say it but I hope OU beats the crap out of Florida. I am tired of the endless SEC bragging, heck, Alabama the top SEC team over the years has never beat Texas they are 0-7-1. If OU wins big, there is a very good chance that Texas gets the AP championship, I know OU fans will hate that but as a fan of the Big 12 that would be a good outcome given the controversy of the 3 way tie. Remember, this was not supposed to be Texas year and for them to finish 11-1 with a BCS bowl and beat the BCS champ head to head speaks volumes of the quality of the conference. Texas also needs to rock Ohio State. I am a UT graduate and a season ticket holder. I have enjoyed TEXAS/OU since the mid-70's, attending all but a couple. I think the best college football in the country is played on either side of the Red River and I wish OU well in the BCS championship. Many of my best friends are OU graduates (an obnoxious bunch) but good luck, don't let the conference down! PS wait till next year in Dallas, 09 will be a championship year for UT.

Even if OU doesn't beat Florida (Which I really think they can, but you can never count out the Tebow factor), if the game is a good close game, who cares who whines. The hardest thing to swallow about those failed attempts at the national championship against LSU in the sugar bowl and USC in what was it, the orange bowl? wasn't the score. It was the fact that we could now be sitting at 9 national championships going for number 10. There is zero doubt about how great a coach stoops is, and how amazing the OU program is. I really hope they get it done. Boomer Sooner!

Robert, Oklahoma City - Dec 8, 2008 at 9:34 pm
Please Bill, thats a joke saying OU is not the program that Texas is.

If you want to talk about underachievers, then Texas is at the top. They have a top 2-3 recruiting class every year and have for decades and how many National Titles do they have. Lets not go there.

Sure OU has struggled but saying the OU program is not at the level as Texas is a joke.
Shane, Springfield - Dec 8, 2008 at 9:31 pm
Bill, I would argue that it wasn't "easily" done. They really had to work. But, with Crow in the lineup, we may as well have been playing with 10.

OU has got to change their approach to preparing for bowl games. They just haven't looked ready to play in the last few years. Stoops needs to light a fire under their butts for several days before the big game. But coaching can only go so far and then it's up to the players to get the job done.

Texas Tech got robbed they should be playing in the Fiesta Bowl not the longhorns. I for one believe head-to-head should count for something, everyone knows Tech handed Texas their hat and showed them the door. If texas wins the Fiesta an astrick has to be put beside the score. The nation knows Tech should be in a BCS bowl.It will be a tainted longhorn victory if they manage to win. 39-33 What else needs to be said? As a father of an Ohio State graduate I hope Larinites and the Buckeyes tear their #@*&#'s up.

Well said, William. The sad thing is that Texas feels like they have MORE of a right to be upset than any of the three way tie teams, because of the so called "neautral field". As a Sooner fan, I at least admitted that EACH of the three teams had equal reasons for potentially being upset over this issue.

You push the 45 - 35 signs and all but what about the 39 - 33 loss to Texas Tech. Oh you want everyone to forget about that one because OU beat TTU by 44 points, so it should only be a 2 way tie. Sorry you can't have your cake and eat it too... If you had played someone other than Rice, UTEP, Arkansas and FAU, the computers probably sent your shorthorns to the Big 12 Title game, and maybe the NC game. Who knows for sure. I have a hard time finding any reason to criticize OU's BCS record. First of all, OU is tied with USC with the most BCS appearances: 6 apiece. OU has won 2 for a 33% winning percentage, including one of 3 NC games, again a 33% winning percentage. Consider how few teams have even been to a BCS bowl, much less a championship game!!

Mack Brown to let Texas Tech play in Fiesta Bowl.

Austin, TX (AP) - In a stunning act of "walking the walk", head coach of the Texas Longhorns Mack Brown announced today that he will reject the Fiesta Bowl's invitation to play in Tempe and demand that Texas Tech participate instead. "They beat us head-to-head," Brown said about the Longhorns' 39-33 beat down they received in Lubbock. "It's only fair. They beat us and it shouldn't matter that we ran up the score on Texas A&M. They beat us and they should go. I mean what kind of world do we live in when we can't decide the better team on the field? We are the second best team in Texas. It was settled back in November." When told he wasn't obligated to do such a thing, Brown replied, "Screw that. In Texas we have dignity. I'm not gonna sit idly while Tech is forced to play in that farce of a Cotton Bowl. Ole Miss doesn't deserve to be there either. They should be playing for the national championship because they beat Florida. What is this world coming to? Grrrr." Brown would not comment on the rumor that he plans on flying a plane over the Cotton Bowl on January 2 with a sign stating "Tech vs. Ole Miss: the REAL National Championship."

Mexico Gets Texas Back Due To Head-To-Head:

AP - In an attempt to appease playoff proponents, particularly President-Elect Barack Obama, President Bush is expected to sign into law a bill that would effectively relinquish control of the state of Texas to Mexico. In a released statement, President Bush said, "After looking at the record and the final outcome, we have no choice but to give the state of Texas to Mexico. Yes, Texas did ultimately prove that it was the more powerful side in the Texas Revolution, but we lost head-to-head to Mexico, Remember the Alamo."

In a similar release, Mack Brown, head football coach at the flagship university of the state of Texas, stated, "Two fine forces meet that day at the Alamo, a neutral site, and Santa Ana lead his troops to an overwhelming victory. Not only is it hard to explain to the Mexican people how they could win the Alamo and still not control Texas but it is unfair, and I agree with President Bush's decision."

Mexican President Felipe Calderon stated, "This is a great day for Mexico. Finally, the United States and Texas have realized that body of work is not the most important factor. What is important, is that we won the Battle of the Alamo, a neutral site I might add. The people of Mexico would like to welcome Texas into the United Mexican States and ensure them that the state of Texas will still be the state of Texas; only now it will be part of the United Mexican States."

Joe, so you are saying that Texas had no business playing for the Big 12 title in 2001 since OU won head-to-head?

OU had one more loss, which was a TIEBREAKER that sent UT.

Tech beat UT. No matter the circumstances, the three have one loss, so it went to the polls, which had OU over UT. Right or Wrong, thats the rule. Take the one loss from each of the three teams and OU has the better body of work hands down.

As usual, the results make for some compelling reading and could make for interesting chit-chat at the next Big 12 coaches meetings. Here are the top five for three coaches voting from the South. Outside of Mack Brown, there's little love for Texas from Art Briles and Mike Leach.

Art Briles, Baylor
1. Oklahoma
2. Florida
3. USC
4. Alabama
5. Texas

Mack Brown, Texas
1. Florida
2. Texas
3. Oklahoma
4. Alabama
5. Penn State

Mike Leach, Texas Tech
1. Oklahoma
2. Texas Tech
3. Florida
4. Alabama
5. Texas

What a joke. It looks like Leach and Briles tagged team their vote against Texas by each placing the 'Horns in the 5th spot. This doesn't pass the smell test coming from Lubbock and Waco.

Art Briles, Former Leach asst....

Leach, what a loser! Give up 65 points in the biggest game in your schools history and then rank yourself #2.

The law of averages say that losses can come in a variety of ways in Bowl Games. Fans with intelligence know this and accept it. We could always bring back Blake or Gibbs. Wouldn't that be great for winning? I dont care about our bowl record of late. Higher levels of competition equal difficult wins and more losses.

I just seen college football live and they talked about Florida's speed on offense and that OU is a 3 point underdog to Florida..but thats fine. In 2000 we were ranked #1 and Florida State was #2. Well OU's #1 again and another team from the state of Florida is #2. We were underdogs against the Seminoles as we are against the Gators. We were underdogs to the Seminoles because of their speed, well thats what I've been hearing is how Florida has too much speed. Sam Bradford wears #14 just like Josh Heupel did. We won that game in the Orange Bowl, I know this stadium is new but it is the Orange Bowl. Deja Vu....I think soo! BOOMER SOONER!!!!

1. Although I expect OU to win, Bob Stoops does not have to win another game this year to be "Big Game Bob" in my viewpoint. Our couple coaches before him could not even find their way to the
big games.
2. IF Sam Bradford is surrounded by "better talent", it is because our coaches do a better job with our players. Texas has had higher recruiting classes than us most every year. If they do not develop their players as well as Stoops and his staff, Sam Bradford is the last person in the world who should be punished.
3. The bias against OU has been ridiculous. We won the tiebreaker by the rules established. It was a three way tie, not a two way tie. Texas agreed to the tie breaker formula. Texas would NOT want to play us again.
4. The only people who disturb me more than the National OU Haters are the fairweather fans (the same goofs who earlier this year wanted to fire Wilson, Venables and a few even wanted to send Bob packing). Such bandwagon dimwits are merely Aggies in Red.

Only problem with your logic is Texas is not playing the number two team. They are playing a team not even ranked in the single digits. I fully expect Texas to stomp on OSU. OSU, this year, is not quite up to Florida's resume or standards.
craig, Oklahoma city - Dec 8, 2008 at 2:43 pm
Oklahoma deserves to be in this game. If Texas had taken care of business vs. Tech, they would be there but they didn't. Both teams are great teams and either would do the Big XII proud. Texas was better in the Cotton Bowl this year. That does not mean O.U. isn't good enough to go. So stop blaming Oklahoma for going, they should be fine. Blame the Big XII for the funky system. And most of all, COULD WE PLEASE GET A PLAYOFF TO WIN IT ON THE FIELD? (Horns 1, O.U. 0 this year. Maybe they would play again IF there was a playoff.) Alas there's not, so if O.U. wins it all, at least Texas can still say they beat the final #1 team in 2008, and perhaps win their bowl game too.

Last FACTS for joe on running up the score:

In twelve games Texas scored 115 points in the fourth quarter. the only game that could be considered "running up the score" was the 21 points at A&M, after it was certain that OU could jump Texas in the standings. Texas did most of their scoring in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Texas through 12 games, scored 104 points.

Oklahoma, through 12 games (not counting the B12 CCG) scored 79 points. 100 points IF YOU COUNT the Big 12 title game. OU scored 24 points in the 4th quarter against OU, mainly because it was a dogfight and after Texas politicked and pulled ahead in the polls. You can debate the merits of Brown's last touchdown however you choose. OU did score 21 in the 4th against Missouri in the title game.

The breakdown is this

Texas
104
173
135
115

OU extra game in ()
215 (225)
203 (231)
150 (153)
79 (100)

Both teams are guilty of style points at the end of the year, but Texas clearly scored more in the 4th, even with the extra 10 OU put on OSU at the end of the game. Otherwise, it would have been worse.

OK. No more responses to whining Texas fans. Go Buckeyes!

I'm not sure what your point is (in Edmond) but Coach Stoops wasn't the one talking to every outlet. He doesn't do that. They have to solicit him to do so. On the BCS show on ESPN (3 hr. show) last night they just had him in his press conference--not a special interview. He turned down an interview in the Texas/A&M game. He spoke up after the championship game--that's when it SHOULD be done--after you've won the Big 12 championship.
Besides what does all this have to do with his work at the OU Medical Center anyway?

I ,for one, have been reading enough of these stupid BS comments. Let's talk about "the game." You just know that all those past BCS games have just got to be in every Sooner players' mind. How could it not be? I think we need some motivation here like what Tebow said about the Big 12 defenses. I got a feeling Florida will be favored by 7 to 10 points. Face it, they are good and it is practically a home game for them. As were LSU and USC games. Wonder what the stragedy will be for the Sooners? Alabama didn't run well against Florida but Alabama doesn't throw much and prefers to play smash mouth football which boded well with Florida because they could stack up the box. They will know that OU will throw and that we have complete confidence with out QB. It's going to have to be a balanced play plan. It has to, and to keep Florida's defense honest. What if OU starts scoring quickly? I wonder if out defense is going to hold up against the pounding from the RB's and their QB. By second half, they will be wore out. So, score as much as possible in the first half and then try and play run out the clock in the second half? Stoops use to do that in the past, but sometimes it has come back and almost bit him in the arshe.
Another thing, let the media go ape $hit over Florida. We just need to keep our mouths shut and get the game book on. Face it, OU won't have a lot of respect going into this game due to the previous performaces. I don't know. There are so many ways to look at this but we just got to play our game and don't go out there acting like we should just be given the trophy now. I think that was the attitude in some of the past bowl games like Boise St. and West V and I'm thinking LSU too but there were a lot of other problems going on. I'll bet Stoops is staying awake at night going over stats, game film and watching every game Florida played this year. Florida just seems kind of snooty.

He is a great coach but an even better person!
Connie, Norman - Dec 8, 2008 at 1:37 pm
Joe is not interested in FACTS people.

- He says OU runs up scores when NO facts support it.

- He takes small excerpts from quotes in articles that only used excerpts, so he basically uses 1/3 of an actual quote to make a point.

- He wont admit that Tech beat them fairly just as UT beat OU fairly. Tech is the better team. They led the entire game and would have won with a field goal even if Crabtree had not scored. Remember, there was 1 second WHEN he scored. Had he gone out of bounds the clock would have stopped at 2. If he were tackled they would have called a time out to set up a FG.

- He calls Stoops classless because he implied that Mack Brown hired that plane, which, first of all, didnt fly over the game, that would be illegal. 2nd Mack was too busy doing interviews during OUR games to book flights, something that Stoops' declined because it is in poor taste.

- Claims that only the computers give OU the edge when UT trails in EVERY poll. UT actually trailed OU after the Tech game but it turned in UT's favor due to the politiking. Nevermind OU won big against a good team on the road while UT won at home by 40 as a 35 point favorite.

I think it is time for all to focus on the games to come - OU, Texas, and OSU fans as well as players. What's done is done. It's the system all...ALL....agreed to play by at the start of the season. If the table had been turned and OU had beat Texas, but had faltered on another game and Texas would have been chosen to play in the Big 12 championship, I'm certain we would have felt the same as the Texas program and fans. And, I'm just a certain that Texas would not have cared and would have turned their attention to the present competitor just as the Sooners did. However, that is not the case. The Sooners were chosen by the system approved by the coaches at the beginning of the season. The Sooners played and won the Big 12 Championship. Grow up, get over it, and give credit where credit is due. OU played brilliantly in the Big 12 Championship. Now it's time to focus on the National Championship game and quit allowing those that insist on continuing to lament on what "should" have been to pull us in to their tired and childish discussions.

Coach Stoops has done well in getting his teams to the bowl series, but there is a lot of improvement needed in the mental preparation for the next game. They need to play, not only strong beginning with the initial kick-off, but also play smart throughout the game AND they need to play for all four quarters. But finally, and just as importantly, they must have a fierce hunger for a decided victory. I think this last component has been missing at the last few bowl game appearances. GO SOONERS! Your fans are behind you and Coach Stoops all the way to Florida and back home........carrying a crystal football back to Norman in the process.

Interesting information. All of it. Not really. Come on now. OU has the best HC in the country, the best QB in the country, the best OL, DL and players in general. Just stop and enjoy it. Forget all the crust and enjoy the pie. This is the year. This is number eight. This team will prove all of the above!

Philip, no excuses for the LSU loss. We didn't get it done. With that said, it wasn't the whippin' we received against USC and it wasn't the embarassment of BSU. What I am saying is that the LSU loss wasn't the embarassment that the other two were.

Jill, if you remember, in the LSU game, OU was just barely an inch away from tying the game. White had a running back who was wide open in the end zone and had the ball hit off the finger tips. It was indeed a great game, just a disappointing result.

For the record, I hate Austin, TX so much that I don't read their paper. The last time I was there, people were driving on the wrong side of the road heading straight at a big 15 passenger van. Again, don't like OU, then shut up and go somewhere else. Your policiting for a UT appearance in a title game is ridiculous. On top of that, we aren't even the ones who decided it.

I would love to see OU win this year, and I agree that the last three BCS bowls have been an embarrassment. I disagree with the LSU game, however. We had a chance to win that game, we had a very injured quarterback, and perhaps LSU was a better team. However, how many other teams in the country have won one national title, been in 6 BCS bowls in the last 9 years, have won 6 conference titles and have played for four national titles? USC has won one more title in that period of time, but has only played in 3. That body of work is incredibly impressive, and just looking at the last 3 losses does not do the seasons that it took to get to those bowls justice.

I just read this quote by Stoops in another newspaper article:

Stoops said he did not notice the plane that buzzed overhead with a banner that read “TEXAS 45 OKLAHOMA 35 — SETTLED ON A NEUTRAL FIELD” before his team’s game at Oklahoma State.

“We should have had one flying the Tech score and the Texas score down at their stadium,” Stoops said of the Longhorns’ 39-33 loss to Texas Tech.

Stoops said he thought of doing that, but did not because “I didn’t think it’d be real classy of me to do.”

Wow, this is coming from the head football coach. This proves my point this man is a class-less putz. Mack Brown didn't hire that plane.

How will Stoops prepare the players for the national championship game? That is the main question this year. Just to be in as many BCS national championship games as Stoops is an unbelievable accomplishment. However, his reputation has been tarnished due to the performance of the Sooners in the last four BCS bowls. It has seemed that they were not interested in the games. KSU took it out of them at the Big 12 championship and they were flat against LSU. USC just had too much firepower and you could see one thing that I thought I would never see in a Sooner team, they quit. Against Boise State they did not start playing until the second half and then getting the lead they let two gadget plays get them. Boise State should not have scored at the end of regulation if the safeties had stayed back as if the norm looking for someone who might break out. The West Virginia team just outplayed our defense. Again the offense did not show up in the first half. The defense did not show up at all. Stoops must rethink how he is getting them ready to play. Florida is a great team and will chew us up if we are not ready this time. You don't get many chances to be a national champion. The Sooners have a great team and need to prove it against the Gators. It will be a great great game. GO SOONERS!!!

Michael , Knoxville - Dec 8, 2008 at 12:52 pm
Joe, Joe, Joe, where do I even start? All the Big 12 teams share any income received from merchandise, bowl payouts, etc so Texas only gets 1/12th of Longhorn bumper stickers sold to horn-haters. The upside is that Texas will receive 1/12th of OU's BCS championship haul so thanks for supporting the Sooners come Jan. 8!

Hey Joe - answer this question. Is Mack Brown really worth his keep? What I mean is he's won ONE Big 12 championship in his ELEVEN years at Texas? That's a lot of money you're paying ole Mack to have just Big 12 championship trophy to show for it. And as far as you naysayers are bringing up the past four BCS bowl games, those are in the past. What do they have to do with this season? This teams is so much better than the past two years and have been battle-tested on the road. I'll take Stoops any day over any other head coach; and Florida hasn't seen an offensive arsenal like Oklahoma. Wait and see.

BCS DECLARES GERMANY WINNER OF WORLD WAR II
US Ranked 3rd

After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS
computers were put to work on other major contests and today the
BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.

“Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning
with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing
on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway,
Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses
came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire
body of work–including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule–
our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking.”

Questioned about the #3 ranking of the United States the BCS
commissioner stated “The US only had two major victories–Japan and
Germany. The computer models, unlike humans, aren’t influenced by
head-to-head contests–they consider each contest to be only a
single, equally-weighted event.”

German Chancellor Adolph Hiter said “Yes, we lost to the US; but we
defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks.” Herr Hitler has been
criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn ’style points’ to
enhance Germany’s rankings.

What if Stoopsy got in the face of his defensive staff, mainly the D-Co-o when an assignment
is blown and the players are out of position, like they have been for a long time, and chewed
their a** on National TV. Kevin Wilson sets in the press box calls plays, offense scores,
nothing to it. Venables and Stoops spend all game shaking their heads at blown coverages,
and assignments. If Wilson can coach up the offense for each game, how come Venables
can't do the same, or Stoops. One game this year the defense was ready to play, T.T.
Back in the day those coaches made sure the defense could be relied on when it was
crunch time.

Each of those 4 BCS Bowl losses have a different story and were all played by different teams.
03 NC - lost by 7 to LSU in New Orleans - respectable loss
04 NC - lost by too much to USC played out of this world and OU didn't
06 Fiesta Bowl - lost by 1 in OT to a higher ranked team - respectable also
07 Fiesta Bowl - lost by 20, mult injuries and one suspension, WVU definitely wanted it more

OU needs be hungry to break this string and disprove all the haters. However, I'll take our consistency of getting there (4 NC games in 9 years and 3 other BCS bowls) over what we had in the years between Switzer and Stoops.

Great article! Unfortunately for Sooner fans and "run up the score Bob," it'll go down as another big defeat, probably not quite to the extent of the 2004 55-19 kicking by USC but something similar. If Bradford, a very fine young man I'm sure, wins the Heisman it'll be similar to White's win in 2004 with the many questions after, "did he really deserve it?" It'll really be sad when Tebow, the best player in the nation, leads his Gators to a resounding victory. Oh, Texas will thoroughly thrash the Buckeyes as well which will make this Sooner defeat even worse. I'm definitely not a Texas fan but have to face reality. The Buckeyes shouldn't even be in a BCS Bowl game. They'll face similar embarrassment as the Sooners for a third straight year.

Why does the OU President always make media statement on football?

How classless is that? I remember he also cried about the OU-Oregon game, when Oregon supposedly retrieved the on-side kick that never went 10 yards and OU lost? David Boren b*t*hed about it then too, whining to the Pac 10 to give the win back to OU. How pathetic.

joe, austin, OU lost to Texas. They weren't beat like a drum, but Texas did win the game. OU is not trying to get around the loss like Texas got around the loss to Tech. The loss Texas had to Tech wasn't held against Texas, and the loss OU had against Texas wasn't held against OU. What is your point? Are you just rambling? Do you think Texas should have got the nod to play in the BCS title game over OU and Tech? Did Texas lose to Tech? Why shouldn't that loss count? Because it hurt Texas? Was the Big12 a two way tie, or was it a three way tie?...... You are right that 10-11-08 will be remembered. With the home cookin that went to Texas how could it be forgotten. It will be remembered when it is time to renew the contract for OU/Texas game at the Cotton Bowl. It won't be renewed, wait and see. A lot of things will be remembered about this season. The records that were set, and the outstanding play by OU. There will be a lot of things remembered that Mack will hope is forgotten.

University of Oklahoma President David Boren tells the Associated Press that now is not the time for rash fixes to the Big 12’s and BCS’s rules.

He tells the AP:

“Every time at this time of year — we can go back the last several years — there have been similar disputes, and yet, the system has not been changed. … I think it’s always best to look at the system after the emotion of the season has died down, because what might be good for Oklahoma one year might be good for Texas the next year, and vice versa. … First of all, I’d say we didn’t determine the rules. The rules were determined before I became president of the university, before Bob Stoops became our coach, before the current commissioner of the Big 12 became the commissioner. The rules were all set up before, so you live by the rules.”

The AP also quotes Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione as saying something that Texas fans have been saying a lot:

“The whole idea was to settle this on the field, and that’s tough. As a competitor, you’re playing to win a game and now you have to play to win people’s opinion. … It gets back to the fact that we have three elements of the decision-making process. Two of them are subjective and you can argue what you believe about the computer polls.”

Boren:
Bob "Poops"
Rhett Bomar
Kelvin Sampson
Barry Switzer....and many, many more.
"We did nothing wrong...its the rules. We didn't determine the rules". Yeah, you don't follow them either.

LMAO

Someone will say it's up to the defense to stop them and they were going for a record of 60+ points in 5 straight games. I say that's a load of crap. There was absolutely no reason for Stoops to 'stoop' that low (pun intended).

Thank you Big 12 for rendering the regular season meaningless. Thank you Stoops for killing sportsmanship. You truly are a piece of work.

For anyone who wants to accuse OU of running up scores, which they DID try to do a little the other night, but really, we are just talking about ONE pass play here. Then they scored on an ordinary run play that went 38 yards, sort of like against OSU. Look at the stats comparing OU, Texas, Florida, and I threw in OSU for good measure. I am NOT accusing these teams of running up scores, just making a point:

First, Sam Bradford has sat out a total of 9 QUARTERS of game time this year. That is 17% of the season!

Of OU's 702 points scored this year, 93 have come in the fourth quarter. That is around 13% of their points. 45 of those 4th quarter points have come in the last two games. In 10 of OU's 13 games they have scored less than 10 points in the fourth quarter.

Of UT's 527 points scored this year, 115 have come in the fourth quarter. That is just a hair under 22% of their points. In only 5 of UT's 12 games they have scored less than 10 points in the fourth quarter.

How about Florida? Of their 587 points, 134 have come in the 4th at just under 23%. In 6 of Florida's 13 games have they scored less than 10 in the 4th.

OSU: 499 total points with 87 in the 4th - 17%. 7 of 12 games with less than 10 in the 4th quarter

All four teams have had 2-4 games that were competitive into the fourth quarter, so you cant say that was running it up, but that pretty much evens out if you look at the schedules of each team.

It is actually MORE impressive for OU since they played 6 teams that are currently in the top 25 (more than anybody else) because all but two of those games (UT and OSU) were over by the 4th quarter.

If you say OU is running it up, you have to accuse the other teams of the same and probably more so.

Yes Joe, even though the Longhorns have scored more in the 4th quarter while blowing teams out. Check the facts, that Missouri game is the only game that you could say they tried to run it up.

Also, ITS NEVER BEEN DONE, against any defense, even though there are plenty of coaches that DO run it up.

OU has "stooped" to a new low. You want to know why no one has scored 60 points in 5 consecutive games before? Because good coaches are good sportsmen. The only time you should score 60 points in a game is when the other team scores 59. I think it is time the Sooners and the BCS recognize poor sportsmanship when they see it.

Oklahoma given back to the indians? You are one piece of work Joe. I saw let us give Oklahoma back to the "native americans" just as soon as we also give Texas back to Mexico.

Also you seem to have forgotten that game as you claim OU fans have. A "sound thrashing?" Did you even watch the game? It was in doubt until the last few minutes of the game. Texas did not even lead until the 4th quarter. Doesn't exactly fall under the category of "sound thrashing."

Could you please just stick to posting on the website of whatever paper there is in Austin. Your comments aren't even the least bit constructive. Haha. Joe is making me laugh. He wont be reading this so I am not speaking to him because his time is too valuable. He has other message boards to post the score on.

Not getting personal, but nobody has forgotten that OU lost to UT. EVERY team in the national title picture has one loss, so two teams HAVE to go and unless you want it to be Utah and Boise St, this is what you have.

Texas Tech dominated Ut more thoroughly than UT did against OU. Fact. OU led most of the game against UT and ran out of gas. No excuse, they got beat, but it wasnt dominant by any stretch. Tech led UT all but 1:40 and people act like Tech was lucky to win. Not mentioning that if Crabtree were tackled short, there would have been two seconds on the clock, Tech with one time-out and a chip shot FG for the win

We will give Oklahoma back to the Indians when you give Texas back to the Mexicans.

BTW, we still havent forgotten '84 when you stole a game from us. Paybacks are B@@@@ arent they?

OU's D line and O line are the keys to this game. If the lines win, the Sooners win. BOTH have to win the battle at the line of scrimmage. If one falls, the other falls.

If OU loses this game, they will replace Ohio State as the biggest joke in college football. Its harsh, but its true.

In 2000, all of the ESPN know-it-alls predicted defeat for OU at the hands of the mighty Seminoles. On the Seminoles' sidelines were professional athletes, who figured they better be with the team that wins. During the coin-toss, Torrance Marshall stared down heisman winner Chris Weinke and then boldly told him 'you stole my boy's trophy and I'm going to get it back.' He didn't get back the trophy but everyone in the nation, except for Sooner Nation, was sad. OU embarrassed the 'Noles because they went in with a chip on their shoulder and never got intimidated. I hope the same holds true this year. Already the nation is badmouthing OU and predicting a Florida win. Good. Put that chip on your team's shoulder, Bob.

I think this years team as a whole has a new and different attitude. They seem more hungry and motivated. Plus they have great disipline, hardly any turnovers and int. I think this will all play a factor. Plus, OU typically plays better when they have people doubting them. OU has the pressure because it is reality. Tradionally, when they are at the big game, out of their familar surroundings, they get so dang nervous, they fold. It could happen again. They will be playing basically on Florida's home field. Miami is just down the road from Gainsville. The Gators will be very relaxed and ready to play. They don't care who it is. OU needs that same killer instinct if they expect to win. No mistakes, not one. Florida gets up by more than 10 points it will be over.
Rusty, Melbourne - Dec 8, 2008 at 9:36 am
So some of you guys would rather win, say the Cotton Bowl, than to lose in the NC game? Thats dumb, and if you believe that you are basically saying that you DONT want a playoff. In a playoff all but one team will finish with a loss. So you are saying that if we DID have an 8 team playoff you would rather not get in because there is an 87.5% chance that you will lose? I would think that there would be alot more pressure on all the rest of the teams/coaches that don't make it, who don't even get close, who have no idea what it is like to even be in the BCS picture, year after year. While OU has seemingly laid an egg the last few years, I much prefer where we are today than the era of the 90's. If I knew what all the problems have been in the last few years losses, I would be coaching and not working for a salary in accounting. Do I like losing, no way. Not now, not ever. It has even seemed at times that OU wasn't as well prepared as they should have been in at least 2 games, WV & USC, the LSU game was closer than the score indicated and Boise State, while underestimated, was lucky. Give me coach that puts
you in the environment of opportunity, year after year, over a coach that gets there 1 out of 5 years, or never, any day. I will try not to complain with my mouth full, so to speak, while others are going hungry.

The "T" is right next to the "y", easy mistake, and he was correct in using "than" rather than "then".

By the way, in the future, it would probably be more correct to use a ; rather than .... after addressing him. Also, consider using two spaces between sentences. I'm sure no one wants to win more than Stoops. The performance in the bowl games is a head scratcher. USC seems to play great in every bowl game. Some of that credit has to go to their players. Some of the blame for OU's problems has to go to the players as well. Malcom Kelly and Reggie Smith who went to the NFL early for some crazy reason were never there for the team in bowl games. The LSU and Boise State games were there for the taking. The team paniced against USC and just never seemed to care against WVU. You could write a book about those four games. That said, win this game and all of that goes away. Lose it, and the stench will not leave the program for a long time. GO SOONERS!!!

When we beat FSU in the NCS, we were the underdogs and were told that we couldn't hang with the speed of FSU. Well 13-2 is a true testament of what being an underdog can do. I hope all of our Big XII brethren do well in their bowl games and make the Big XII proud. The conference has been beaten up by just about everyone and for our teams to go undefeated in the bowl games would do a lot to silence the critics.

It's a shame that OU has had such a successful and record breaking year, but has had to continuously fend off constant insults and unnecessary and meritless critizism. Now, and for the next month, we will be bombarded by continuous assaults on our coach and players for losing past bowl games. We will have to endure stories of the great Florida defense, the unbreakable will and leadership of Florida's quarterback, and why we don't deserve to be on the same planet as the powerful "Gaters". My holiday wish is for all the media to continue their "bashing the Sooners policy" right up to game time. This continuous lack of respect will quietly build in the minds and hearts of our football athletes, and I'm sure they will respond the same way they responded in the Big 12 championship game. Study hard and heal-up fellows, and when its your time to unleash your fury, do it with continuous class and with a vengence on the football field that will resonate through the annuls of college football forever.
