But the stakes are not the same for Oklahoma and
Florida, the teams coronated Sunday for college football’s two-team playoff, Jan. 8 in
Miami.
Both chase the same carrot. A national championship and all that comes with it: Eternal adoration from a devoted fan base; untold riches in terms of salaries for coaches and plusher towels in the locker room; free doughnuts at several diners in the tri-county area.
The
Sooners and Gators have the same to gain. But the Sooners have more on the line.
Win this game, and bye-bye goes all the aggravation of recent years and recent weeks.
Frankly, Oklahoma football has been a punching bag. Some of it self-inflicted.
OU’s bowl slump — four straight
BCS bowl defeats, with a Holiday win thrown in to break up the monotony — has been a big bugaboo, and not just on the nation’s gazillion talk shows.
Bob Stoops himself has admitted the exasperation, telling his troops last year in
Phoenix how tired he was of seeing his bowl record crawl at the bottom of
ESPN. And Sooner fans are getting downright tired of it, too.
But the bowl slump is small spuds compared to the comic opera played out in the Big 12 South in November, when OU,
Texas Tech and
Texas forged an unbreakable three-way tie that resulted in the Sooners getting the BCS love and Texas getting the national media love.
Thus, the stakes in Miami: Win this game, and farewell not just to the bowl problem but all the babble about Texas. Beat Florida, and critics suddenly will toss laurel wreaths instead of barbs.
Lose this game, and it’s more than lost opportunity at a precious national title. Lose this game, and it’s even more than multiplication of the bowl malaise. Lose this game, and the Sooners will hear forever how they didn’t belong in the big game, and the outcry will come from more than Longhorns.
Even Stoops admits the presence of such story lines.
"Everything’s a factor,” Stoops said Sunday night. "You’re aware of what’s been said about our program.”
The Sooners’ two most recent trips to this national finals rodeo has resulted in more than defeats. Both times, the Sooners went amid a BCS controversy. Both times, OU failed to justify its inclusion. A 21-14 loss to LSU in which the Sooners played poorly; a 55-19 thrashing by Southern Cal that ranks as the most embarrassing game of the Stoops’ era, if not since statehood.
Now, questions bloom again. The only answer is victory.
Oklahoma-Florida is a high-reward game. For the Sooners, it’s also high-risk.

When Florida pounds the paper champs we'll see if he is anywhere to be found. Maybe ESPN can show up at his trailer with a twelve pack and a NASCAR hat and be able to coax him out of his drunken stupor for a quote or something.

Clue in chump - not all the starters were in - the RB who scored was the THIRD STRINGER. I guess Bob could have put in a ruf nek.
How 'bout that 70-3 score Texas put on Colorado back in '05, Joey Boy? That was a real humanitarian effort by Mack, eh?
f____ed up map.
AFter OU won the Big 12 and was elevated to Number one and the BCS Bowl, it is only fair TT play in the Fiesta Bowl. In a two team race for second place how can you send the team that TT beat "head to head". I like that term, "head to head". Mack, the Texas nation, and all the ESPN talking heads used that term a billion times. So now why doesn't it apply to TT and Texas for the Fiesta Bowl??
But...this year with Mack constantly politicking and the plane banners flying around, just became too much for me. TExas, did, in fact beat OU. That is a fact. It is also a fact that TT beat Texas. So, in my feeble mind, it seems TT should be playing in the Fiesta Bowl. Hey, they beat Texas head to head...

It was crap like that broke our concentration in last years bowel fiasco.
If you want to talk about underachievers, then Texas is at the top. They have a top 2-3 recruiting class every year and have for decades and how many National Titles do they have. Lets not go there.
Sure OU has struggled but saying the OU program is not at the level as Texas is a joke.
I also feel like you are a wHorn in disguise. Quit with the "we" in reference to OU.

I bet you were a big fan of that center that got run out of Austin.
Austin, TX (AP) - In a stunning act of "walking the walk", head coach of the Texas Longhorns Mack Brown announced today that he will reject the Fiesta Bowl's invitation to play in Tempe and demand that Texas Tech participate instead. "They beat us head-to-head," Brown said about the Longhorns' 39-33 beat down they received in Lubbock. "It's only fair. They beat us and it shouldn't matter that we ran up the score on Texas A&M. They beat us and they should go. I mean what kind of world do we live in when we can't decide the better team on the field? We are the second best team in Texas. It was settled back in November." When told he wasn't obligated to do such a thing, Brown replied, "Screw that. In Texas we have dignity. I'm not gonna sit idly while Tech is forced to play in that farce of a Cotton Bowl. Ole Miss doesn't deserve to be there either. They should be playing for the national championship because they beat Florida. What is this world coming to? Grrrr." Brown would not comment on the rumor that he plans on flying a plane over the Cotton Bowl on January 2 with a sign stating "Tech vs. Ole Miss: the REAL National Championship."
AP - In an attempt to appease playoff proponents, particularly President-Elect Barack Obama, President Bush is expected to sign into law a bill that would effectively relinquish control of the state of Texas to Mexico. In a released statement, President Bush said, "After looking at the record and the final outcome, we have no choice but to give the state of Texas to Mexico. Yes, Texas did ultimately prove that it was the more powerful side in the Texas Revolution, but we lost head-to-head to Mexico, Remember the Alamo."
In a similar release, Mack Brown, head football coach at the flagship university of the state of Texas, stated, "Two fine forces meet that day at the Alamo, a neutral site, and Santa Ana lead his troops to an overwhelming victory. Not only is it hard to explain to the Mexican people how they could win the Alamo and still not control Texas but it is unfair, and I agree with President Bush's decision."
Mexican President Felipe Calderon stated, "This is a great day for Mexico. Finally, the United States and Texas have realized that body of work is not the most important factor. What is important, is that we won the Battle of the Alamo, a neutral site I might add. The people of Mexico would like to welcome Texas into the United Mexican States and ensure them that the state of Texas will still be the state of Texas; only now it will be part of the United Mexican States."

OU had one more loss, which was a TIEBREAKER that sent UT.
Tech beat UT. No matter the circumstances, the three have one loss, so it went to the polls, which had OU over UT. Right or Wrong, thats the rule. Take the one loss from each of the three teams and OU has the better body of work hands down.
Texas beat ou and the conference gave the loser of the head to head a shot at the national championship game which I will call today.
Florida will hand it to ou once again and you can bank the following, LSU, USC, BSU, WVU, FU, UT. And by the way, be ready for the ass whipping next October in the Cotton Bowl.

Why do they let a guy like Leach even vote. You give up 65 points in the biggest game in your schools history while ranked #2 and you turn around and vote yourself #2 at years end. WOW!!

big games.
2. IF Sam Bradford is surrounded by "better talent", it is because our coaches do a better job with our players. Texas has had higher recruiting classes than us most every year. If they do not develop their players as well as Stoops and his staff, Sam Bradford is the last person in the world who should be punished.
3. The bias against OU has been ridiculous. We won the tiebreaker by the rules established. It was a three way tie, not a two way tie. Texas agreed to the tie breaker formula. Texas would NOT want to play us again.
4. The only people who disturb me more than the National OU Haters are the fairweather fans (the same goofs who earlier this year wanted to fire Wilson, Venables and a few even wanted to send Bob packing). Such bandwagon dimwits are merely Aggies in Red.
If OU beats Florida and Texas beats Ohio State, how about 1 more game on the 17th of January. I am pretty sure they way the media is looking at it is, if OU beats Florida and Texas beats OSU then there will probably be a split National Championship

Only problem with your logic is Texas is not playing the number two team. They are playing a team not even ranked in the single digits. I fully expect Texas to stomp on OSU. OSU, this year, is not quite up to Florida's resume or standards.
In twelve games Texas scored 115 points in the fourth quarter. the only game that could be considered "running up the score" was the 21 points at A&M, after it was certain that OU could jump Texas in the standings. Texas did most of their scoring in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Texas through 12 games, scored 104 points.
Oklahoma, through 12 games (not counting the B12 CCG) scored 79 points. 100 points IF YOU COUNT the Big 12 title game. OU scored 24 points in the 4th quarter against OU, mainly because it was a dogfight and after Texas politicked and pulled ahead in the polls. You can debate the merits of Brown's last touchdown however you choose. OU did score 21 in the 4th against Missouri in the title game.
The breakdown is this
Texas
104
173
135
115
OU extra game in ()
215 (225)
203 (231)
150 (153)
79 (100)
Both teams are guilty of style points at the end of the year, but Texas clearly scored more in the 4th, even with the extra 10 OU put on OSU at the end of the game. Otherwise, it would have been worse.
OK. No more responses to whining Texas fans. Go Buckeyes!
Boomer!
Besides what does all this have to do with his work at the OU Medical Center anyway?
Bob Stoops is such a great coach! Mack Brown cant hold a candle to Bob.
Six Big XII titles since 2000 is impressive. We only have one for crying out loud. Talk about a bail out. Vince Young bailed good ol' Mack out.
We lost to Texas A & M two years in a row. Come on Mack...Texas A & M.
I wish Texas was as good as Oklahoma!
Why not run back to you UT forums, you're points you make which are consistently proven as inaccurate, won't get much play here.
When you're coach tries to change the rules AFTER he agreed to him, it's whinning.
OU got to the game because they followed the rules.
Another thing, let the media go ape $hit over Florida. We just need to keep our mouths shut and get the game book on. Face it, OU won't have a lot of respect going into this game due to the previous performaces. I don't know. There are so many ways to look at this but we just got to play our game and don't go out there acting like we should just be given the trophy now. I think that was the attitude in some of the past bowl games like Boise St. and West V and I'm thinking LSU too but there were a lot of other problems going on. I'll bet Stoops is staying awake at night going over stats, game film and watching every game Florida played this year. Florida just seems kind of snooty.
He is a great coach but an even better person!
- He says OU runs up scores when NO facts support it.
- He takes small excerpts from quotes in articles that only used excerpts, so he basically uses 1/3 of an actual quote to make a point.
- He wont admit that Tech beat them fairly just as UT beat OU fairly. Tech is the better team. They led the entire game and would have won with a field goal even if Crabtree had not scored. Remember, there was 1 second WHEN he scored. Had he gone out of bounds the clock would have stopped at 2. If he were tackled they would have called a time out to set up a FG.
- He calls Stoops classless because he implied that Mack Brown hired that plane, which, first of all, didnt fly over the game, that would be illegal. 2nd Mack was too busy doing interviews during OUR games to book flights, something that Stoops' declined because it is in poor taste.
- Claims that only the computers give OU the edge when UT trails in EVERY poll. UT actually trailed OU after the Tech game but it turned in UT's favor due to the politiking. Nevermind OU won big against a good team on the road while UT won at home by 40 as a 35 point favorite.
Coach Stoops has done well in getting his teams to the bowl series, but there is a lot of improvement needed in the mental preparation for the next game. They need to play, not only strong beginning with the initial kick-off, but also play smart throughout the game AND they need to play for all four quarters. But finally, and just as importantly, they must have a fierce hunger for a decided victory. I think this last component has been missing at the last few bowl game appearances. GO SOONERS! Your fans are behind you and Coach Stoops all the way to Florida and back home........carrying a crystal football back to Norman in the process.
Lisa, OKC
THE TRUE CURE: Oklahoma Sooners 2008 National Football Champions!
Stoops said he did not notice the plane that buzzed overhead with a banner that read “TEXAS 45 OKLAHOMA 35 — SETTLED ON A NEUTRAL FIELD” before his team’s game at Oklahoma State.
“We should have had one flying the Tech score and the Texas score down at their stadium,” Stoops said of the Longhorns’ 39-33 loss to Texas Tech.
Stoops said he thought of doing that, but did not because “I didn’t think it’d be real classy of me to do.”
Wow, this is coming from the head football coach. This proves my point this man is a class-less putz. Mack Brown didn't hire that plane.
STOOPS AND COMPANY, KNOW HOW TO LOSE.
JUST GIVE THEM TIME, THEY'LL GET UPTIGHT.
GATORS WILL FEED, COME BCS NIGHT!!!
I challenge anyone to give me an example of OU running up the score this year outside of ONE play vs. Mizzou. Joe? Gary?
Question of the day: Who's the biggest joke? Sooners or the BCS?
US Ranked 3rd
After determining the Big-12 championship game participants the BCS
computers were put to work on other major contests and today the
BCS declared Germany to be the winner of World War II.
“Germany put together an incredible number of victories beginning
with the annexation of Austria and the Sudetenland and continuing
on into conference play with defeats of Poland, France, Norway,
Sweden, Denmark, Belgium and the Netherlands. Their only losses
came against the US and Russia; however considering their entire
body of work–including an incredibly tough Strength of Schedule–
our computers deemed them worthy of the #1 ranking.”
Questioned about the #3 ranking of the United States the BCS
commissioner stated “The US only had two major victories–Japan and
Germany. The computer models, unlike humans, aren’t influenced by
head-to-head contests–they consider each contest to be only a
single, equally-weighted event.”
German Chancellor Adolph Hiter said “Yes, we lost to the US; but we
defeated #2 ranked France in only 6 weeks.” Herr Hitler has been
criticized for seeking dramatic victories to earn ’style points’ to
enhance Germany’s rankings.
is blown and the players are out of position, like they have been for a long time, and chewed
their a** on National TV. Kevin Wilson sets in the press box calls plays, offense scores,
nothing to it. Venables and Stoops spend all game shaking their heads at blown coverages,
and assignments. If Wilson can coach up the offense for each game, how come Venables
can't do the same, or Stoops. One game this year the defense was ready to play, T.T.
Back in the day those coaches made sure the defense could be relied on when it was
crunch time.
LMAO
03 NC - lost by 7 to LSU in New Orleans - respectable loss
04 NC - lost by too much to USC played out of this world and OU didn't
06 Fiesta Bowl - lost by 1 in OT to a higher ranked team - respectable also
07 Fiesta Bowl - lost by 20, mult injuries and one suspension, WVU definitely wanted it more
OU needs be hungry to break this string and disprove all the haters. However, I'll take our consistency of getting there (4 NC games in 9 years and 3 other BCS bowls) over what we had in the years between Switzer and Stoops.
They should be our reps in the Fiesta Bowl. Who won in the Head to head matchup????
Once again, Texas is a pretender....
OU #1
UT #3

How classless is that? I remember he also cried about the OU-Oregon game, when Oregon supposedly retrieved the on-side kick that never went 10 yards and OU lost? David Boren b*t*hed about it then too, whining to the Pac 10 to give the win back to OU. How pathetic.
45-35
He tells the AP:
“Every time at this time of year — we can go back the last several years — there have been similar disputes, and yet, the system has not been changed. … I think it’s always best to look at the system after the emotion of the season has died down, because what might be good for Oklahoma one year might be good for Texas the next year, and vice versa. … First of all, I’d say we didn’t determine the rules. The rules were determined before I became president of the university, before Bob Stoops became our coach, before the current commissioner of the Big 12 became the commissioner. The rules were all set up before, so you live by the rules.”
The AP also quotes Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione as saying something that Texas fans have been saying a lot:
“The whole idea was to settle this on the field, and that’s tough. As a competitor, you’re playing to win a game and now you have to play to win people’s opinion. … It gets back to the fact that we have three elements of the decision-making process. Two of them are subjective and you can argue what you believe about the computer polls.”
Boren:
Bob "Poops"
Rhett Bomar
Kelvin Sampson
Barry Switzer....and many, many more.
"We did nothing wrong...its the rules. We didn't determine the rules". Yeah, you don't follow them either.

Jeanie, you are correct and I knew it from the start but I got sucked in. We should all drop it. Im done letting him get to me. He is posting the same junk over and over but really is left without any argument except 45-35, which, admittedly, WAS a good argument last week, but that ship has sailed.
Sincerely,
Joe Baby in Austin

39-33, just to play that childish game with you, joe, Austin.
Someone will say it's up to the defense to stop them and they were going for a record of 60+ points in 5 straight games. I say that's a load of crap. There was absolutely no reason for Stoops to 'stoop' that low (pun intended).
Thank you Big 12 for rendering the regular season meaningless. Thank you Stoops for killing sportsmanship. You truly are a piece of work.

First, Sam Bradford has sat out a total of 9 QUARTERS of game time this year. That is 17% of the season!
Of OU's 702 points scored this year, 93 have come in the fourth quarter. That is around 13% of their points. 45 of those 4th quarter points have come in the last two games. In 10 of OU's 13 games they have scored less than 10 points in the fourth quarter.
Of UT's 527 points scored this year, 115 have come in the fourth quarter. That is just a hair under 22% of their points. In only 5 of UT's 12 games they have scored less than 10 points in the fourth quarter.
How about Florida? Of their 587 points, 134 have come in the 4th at just under 23%. In 6 of Florida's 13 games have they scored less than 10 in the 4th.
OSU: 499 total points with 87 in the 4th - 17%. 7 of 12 games with less than 10 in the 4th quarter
All four teams have had 2-4 games that were competitive into the fourth quarter, so you cant say that was running it up, but that pretty much evens out if you look at the schedules of each team.
It is actually MORE impressive for OU since they played 6 teams that are currently in the top 25 (more than anybody else) because all but two of those games (UT and OSU) were over by the 4th quarter.
If you say OU is running it up, you have to accuse the other teams of the same and probably more so.
Texas has scored more points in the 4th quarter this year than OU. Look it up. So who's running up the score? Just sounds like a Loser Longhorn to me (yes capitalized on purporse - it's proper). Why don't you think a little before you ramble off about how much of an inferiority complex you have!! Logic doesn't apply to crybabies! Ha HAAAAH!. So you much for you "not caring" what Sooners think.
UT = 2nd best team in Texas.
Also, ITS NEVER BEEN DONE, against any defense, even though there are plenty of coaches that DO run it up.
last time I checked its the other teams job to stop you from scoring

Odd to me how you can forget what happened 4 weeks ago but what happened 7 weeks ago is seared in your memory. Short term memory loss. You need to see a qualified health professional soon.
UT: 1 conference championship in 11 years of Mack Brown. ROFLMFAO!
NO ONE cares about Texas but Texans.
Also you seem to have forgotten that game as you claim OU fans have. A "sound thrashing?" Did you even watch the game? It was in doubt until the last few minutes of the game. Texas did not even lead until the 4th quarter. Doesn't exactly fall under the category of "sound thrashing."
Could you please just stick to posting on the website of whatever paper there is in Austin. Your comments aren't even the least bit constructive. I expect crazy comments, but at least some of them bring up valid points. Your comments (notice I used a possessive pronoun correctly!) add nothing whatsoever to any discussion.
Sorry to get off subject. It is, I agree with you, just a game not to be vicariously lived through. Maybe it is also a distraction from the pathetic way our government from both sides of the aisle is letting our country implode.
Not getting personal, but nobody has forgotten that OU lost to UT. EVERY team in the national title picture has one loss, so two teams HAVE to go and unless you want it to be Utah and Boise St, this is what you have.
Texas Tech dominated Ut more thoroughly than UT did against OU. Fact. OU led most of the game against UT and ran out of gas. No excuse, they got beat, but it wasnt dominant by any stretch. Tech led UT all but 1:40 and people act like Tech was lucky to win. Not mentioning that if Crabtree were tackled short, there would have been two seconds on the clock, Tech with one time-out and a chip shot FG for the win
We will give Oklahoma back to the Indians when you give Texas back to the Mexicans.
BTW, we still havent forgotten '84 when you stole a game from us. Paybacks are B@@@@ arent they?
If OU loses this game, they will replace Ohio State as the biggest joke in college football. Its harsh, but its true.
you in the environment of opportunity, year after year, over a coach that gets there 1 out of 5 years, or never, any day. I will try not to complain with my mouth full, so to speak, while others are going hungry.
tunity, year after year
Second, it is always the antagonist with no argument who is the first to critisize grammar and spelling. ITS A MESSAGE BOARD! This is not literature.
Most guys type these things in 30 seconds between other tasks. I suppose you usually write a rough draft, edit, final draft, then proof read?
The "T" is right next to the "y", easy mistake, and he was correct in using "than" rather than "then".
By the way, in the future, it would probably be more correct to use a ; rather than .... after addressing him. Also, consider using two spaces between sentences. You also put ..... when you should have used a comma, question mark, or a period. Lastly, using multiple question marks (????) is considered a faux paux as well. Get a life.
Let's see OSU win South, win Big XII win BCS game. East to talk smack if you've never done it. I would rather go & lose than not go. When is the last time OSU won the conference
