Plenty of women thought that would happen with boyfriend jeans, last summer’s hot look embraced by actresses Katie Holmes, Reece Witherspoon and Sarah Jessica Parker. It grabbed immediate attention, but no one really thought it would capture the hearts of the masses.
It did. And boyfriend jeans are bigger than ever — big, as in more popular.
Maybe their big popularity stems from their big size. The style is loose and comfortable, a refreshing change from super skinny styles that usually look best on boyish figures.
Brook Balentine, a buyer for Cayman’s Clothiers in Norman, raves about the comfort and versatility of boyfriend jeans. They can be dressed up with little heels and a blazer or worn with flats and a T-shirt.
"Now, they’re not the most flattering of jeans,” she said. "It’s not a sexy jean. It’s a comfort jean. ... In Oklahoma, we’re all about comfort anyway, so that’s even better.”
Balentine said the jeans are available in many fits, including the really baggy ones that Holmes was photographed wearing, to styles that are more slim and tapered. With so many fits available, most women will be able to find a style that looks good on them.
The style reaches so many different women, and that’s what’s great, Balentine said.
"It’s not necessarily a low-rise jean. It’s like putting on your boyfriend’s jeans. If you put on his old 501 Levi’s, they wouldn’t be low rise. The style is meant to hang on your hips, so it’s going to sag a bit.
