Beautiful fall weather today and this week in Oklahoma follows near-record October rain and cold
Published: November 1, 2009
October closed with a nearly perfect Saturday evening for trick-or-treating, but the rest of the month was mostly cold and wet.
Oklahoma's statewide average precipitation in October was 6.9 inches, about 31/2 inches above normal and the fifth-wettest October since record-keeping began in 1895, associate state climatologist Gary McManus said in an Oklahoma Mesonet news release. The wettest was 1941 with a statewide average of 11.3 inches.
The statewide average October temperature of 54.5 degrees came close to the coldest on record, 54.4 degrees in 1925, McManus said. October's average was 6.8 degrees below normal. The average temperature is an average of daily highs and lows.
The average temperature in Oklahoma City of 57.7 degrees tied the average in 1895 for the second-coldest October, according to the National Weather Service. The coldest was 53.2 degrees in 1925.
All regions of the state received above-average rainfall during October, according to the Climatological Survey.
The U.S. Drought Monitor reports no area of Oklahoma in a drought condition and the U.S. Seasonal Drought Outlook predicts normal rainfall for Oklahoma through January.
But the first week of November will be a different story. Daytime highs in the 60s, sunny skies and shifting calm winds are forecast for Oklahoma, the weather service reported. Clear nights with overnight lows in the 40s are expected, although patchy light frost is possible in some areas.
