The 107th Bedlam football game arrives Saturday, and this one has some historical distinction. And not just because OSU is coming off a victory, which it's done only 17 times when in-state rivals meet.

The 2011 game marks the eighth meeting between Bob Stoops and Mike Gundy as head coaches.

It also marks Landry Jones' fourth Bedlam start. The Oklahoman found only one other quarterback to make four Bedlam starts since World War II: fellow by the name of Mike Gundy.

Gundy vs. Stoops

Saturday in Norman, Mike Gundy battles Bob Stoops for the eighth time as a head coach. That means Stoops and Gundy tie Bud Wilkinson and Cliff Speegle for the most-played coaching rivalry in Bedlam.

Wilkinson and Speegle combated from 1955-62, with Wilkinson winning every year.

“We've been fortunate,” Gundy said. “I've had some really good guys that work here with me. We created some stability in our program in our third and fourth year. We've been able to recruit well enough, hit on some first-round draft picks, so we've been able to stick around year after year.”

Gundy said his relationship with Stoops is solid, same as every coach in the Big 12.

“At times you don't think about it a lot,” Gundy said. “The coaches in our league get along really well. Really the only time we spend much time talking is before the games or at the Big 12 meetings.

“I do enjoy seeing the same guys each year.”

Stoops is 6-1 against Gundy, with OSU's 44-10 victory last season ending an eight-game Sooner winning streak in the series.

Here are the longest Bedlam coaching rivalries:

6: OU's Barry Switzer vs. OSU's Jim Stanley. Switzer 5-1.

6: OU's Gary Gibbs vs. OSU's Pat Jones, 1989-94. Gibbs 5-0-1.

5: OU's Bennie Owen vs. OSU's Paul Davis. Owen leads 5-0.

Jones is Old Man Bedlam

Landry Jones has a new nickname, after rallying the Sooners to a 50-49 victory at West Virginia on Saturday night. Mr. Clutch.

But this week, Jones is due another nickname. Old Man Bedlam.

The OU quarterback is set to make his fourth Bedlam start, and Jones is believed to be just the second quarterback to start four Bedlam games.
