NORMAN — The atmosphere inside McCasland Field House was so intense that Oklahoma's Ross Larson had to find a way to calm himself down.
Halfway through Sunday's dual against Bedlam rival OSU, the freshman knew it would come down to him in the final match at 285 pounds.
He was right, and he delivered in the clutch.
Larson's 3-2 decision over OSU's Austin Mardsen lifted the fourth-ranked Sooners to a 16-15 win over the fifth-ranked Cowboys in front of a sellout crowd of 3,355 on Sunday.
“I went back (to the locker room) after the (157-pound) match and laid down on the couch to try and calm myself,” Larson said. “I had to get my heart rate down a little bit. That atmosphere can really get you riled up.”
Larson's decisive win was set up by Andrew Howe, Danny Chaid, and Travis Rutt all picking up wins to reduce a 12-point OSU lead to just two.
Rutt, ranked No. 5 at 197 pounds, used four takedowns to defeat No. 10 Blake Rosholt by major decision, 12-3.
“I knew coming into the dual it would come down to bonus points,” Rutt said. “Before my match, I knew if things went the way I expected them to we'd be tied at the end, so something needed to happen.”
Rutt's bonus-point win made the team score 15-13 and gave the Sooners, who would have lost on criteria in the event of a tie, a realistic opportunity to win the dual going into Larson's match.
“I was ready to go,” Larson said. “Travis getting the major decision, I knew if I got the win, we were going to win the dual. I wasn't nervous at all at that point. I just carried the momentum into my match.”
Howe won the most anticipated match of the dual. The top-ranked senior defeated No. 2 Chris Perry 4-2 at 174 pounds.
