Beer event seeks to aide pet adoption charity

Nick Trougakos Published: July 26, 2013

Wanted to pass along some information about a fundraising beer event set for this weekend, and about the group that is putting the event on.

First, the event: A beer and pizza fundraiser to benefit the OK Save A Dog Foundation. The shindig is set for 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Skinny Slim’s Public House, 201 E Main St. Beer is being provided by Roughtail Brewing, pizza is being baked the Wedge in Deep Deuce and Erick Taylor will perform live acoustic music.

A donation of $15 is recommended, but of course, more will be accepted. As you know, $15 for craft beer and pizza is a good deal any way you slice it.

The event flyer is below:

If you looked over the flyer, you may be asking, “What’s with this HOPS group?” Glad you asked.

HOPS, or Helping Oklahoma Philanthropy Succeed, is the brainchild of local beer fans and homebrewers Aaron Ellis and Miguel Soares. As the story goes, Ellis and Soares were ruminating over a couple cold ones when they decided it would be great to combine their love of beer with an effort to support local charities.

And HOPS was born. Soares said the plan is that HOPS “would set up events where local microbreweries and other Oklahoma businesses would donate services and goods in order to create viable attractive events where we could raise money for a given charity that HOPS had vetted.

“The idea was to promote the great microbreweries in our area and to promote smaller charities that could use the help. The platform we created is meant to encourage the mixing of multiple networks and to get exposure for the various groups,” Soares said.

Sunday’s event is the first effort for HOPS. You can learn more about the group by visiting its Facebook page.
