Sam Bradford and the Sooners: A sling and a prayer

ARLINGTON, Texas — His arm in a sling and his Heisman repeat hopes burning like a Mission Impossible fuse, Sam Bradford stood on the sidelines and watched the sordid meltdown of his offense.

But before you go blaming Brigham Young’s 14-13 upset of Oklahoma on Bradford’s bum shoulder, remember that in the first half, Bradford had an even better view of the troubles that led to defeat and call into question the Sooners’ championship hopes.

Truth is, OU’s offense stunk, both before and after Bradford missed the second half with a separated shoulder.

We all want to know when Bradford will return — for Miami on Oct. 3, for Texas, pray tell, on Oct. 17? And for that matter fellow all-American Jermaine Gresham. The tight end missed the game with knee cartilage damage.

But here’s who OU missed just as much against BYU: Duke Robinson, Phil Loadholt, Brandon Walker and Jon Cooper, the stellar seniors who anchored the offensive line in Bradford’s first two seasons.

OU’s revamped O-line, which drew raves from coordinator Kevin Wilson in August camp, was a total bust against BYU.

Penalties galore. Lack of brute force when it mattered most. Missed calls, including on the play in which linebacker Coleby Clawson rammed Bradford to the Jerry Jones World turf, separating the shoulder.
