Best in Class: OU signee Brennan Clay is from running back capital San Diego

NORMAN — San Diego just might be the running back capital of the world.

In Marcus Allen, Rashaan Salaam, Ricky Williams and Reggie Bush, the city has produced four Heisman Trophy running backs.

San Diego is also the hometown of NFL MVPs LaDainian Tomlinson and Terrell Davis.

In Scripps Ranch High School star Brennan Clay, the Sooners hope they’ve found the next great San Diego back.

"Kind of reminds you of Joe Washington,” coach Bob Stoops said during his signing day press conference. "Or maybe Reggie Bush.”

Clay, the consensus top-ranked recruit in OU’s 2010 recruiting class along with Wichita, Kan., quarterback Blake Bell, indeed has similar skill sets to Bush.

Like Bush, the 6-foot, 190-pound Clay is lethal both as a runner and as a receiver.

Two years ago, Clay became the first San Diego high school player ever to total more than 1,000 yards rushing and receiving in the same season, rushing for 1,453 yards and 20 touchdowns and reeling in 70 passes for 1,055 yards six scores.

For a senior encore, Clay ran for 2,026 yards and 26 touchdowns and finished with 23 receptions for 379 yards and a score while leading Scripps Ranch deep into the playoffs.

"He’s one of those guys that’s extremely versatile,” said Clay’s high school coach, Sergio Diaz.
