Albom, writer of inspirational best sellers "Tuesdays With Morrie" and "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," will appear at the event Thursday at First Presbyterian Church, 1001 NW 25. Doors open at 8 a.m.; the event begins at 8:30. Deep Fork Grill will cater the breakfast. Tickets are $25.
Sponsored by Full Circle Bookstore, the breakfast will benefit Wilson Arts Inc., a nonprofit group that supports the arts-integrated curriculum at Wilson Elementary.
"He's a big name. ... It's just a great opportunity for us to raise the funds. He was a journalist, and he's an author, so I think it's a good fit for the school," the group's treasurer Renate Wiggin said.
The event is part of the group's campaign to fund four added classrooms at the school. Since June 2005, it has raised $850,000 in donations and pledges, the amount budgeted for the classrooms. The campaign continues with a goal of raising $1 million to pay for equipment and other building improvements, she said. The group received a $25,000 challenge grant this year from the Kerr Foundation.
Full Circle owner Jim Tolbert said Albom's representatives contacted the store several months ago wanting to arrange an Oklahoma City stop, preferably a ticketed event benefiting a charity.
"My grandchildren go to Wilson, so that had an instant appeal to me," Tolbert said. "This school has an arts-integrated curriculum that's been demonstrably successful from the test scores. But it takes extra room."
Albom will speak and read from "For One More Day," which recently topped The New York TimesBest Sellers List. He also will sign copies of his books, which Full Circle will sell at the event.
Reservations and ticket payments must be made by 5 p.m. Monday. For more information or tickets, call Molly Tolbert at 990-5509.
