Bethany approves agreement for road projects

BETHANY — City council members this week approved an agreement with the state Transportation Department for two road improvement projects using funds from the federal economic stimulus package.

The project entails overlaying Rockwell from NW 16 to NW 23 and on NW 36 from Rockwell to Hammond. Ramps will be installed for the disabled, said Steve Katen, community development director.

The state Transportation Department has been authorized to use $589,898 in stimulus funds for the project. The Transportation Department will pay all costs and handle the bid process.

If Bethany officials want to change signage, speed limits, traffic signals or make other modifications on the two roads in the future, they must get approval from the Transportation Department.

In other business, city council members also approved applying for a $29,888 grant from the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office.

Police Chief Phil Cole said the money would go toward overtime pay for police officers who work traffic enforcement shifts, purchasing three police radars and sending two officers to a training program.
