Edmond planning commissioners recommended approval of a specific use permit for a cellphone tower on land north of Coffee Creek Road and east of Midwest Boulevard.

The request for the 180-foot tall, monopole was made by Verizon Wireless officials who said there are gaps in cell service in this area. Other cellular telephone providers are expected to use Verizon’s tower.

City council members are expected to make a final decision at their Jan. 27 meeting.

Verizon Wireless is leasing a 50-foot by 50-foot piece of land from Mark and Shirley Herkert.
