"The prayer of faith will save the sick, and the Lord will raise them up; and anyone who has committed sins will be forgiven.”
— James 5:15 The Bible promises many gifts to those who pray. Jesus declared, "Whatever you ask for in prayer with faith, you will receive” (Matthew 21:22). On the other hand, James rightly warns, "You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, in order to spend what you get on your pleasures” (James 4:3). Right belief is the secret to right praying; that is, praying that pleases God and does not violate God's holy, loving, just, and merciful character. Through Bible study, believers discover how God has answered prayers in the past and some of the ways God will answer their prayers today. Jesus healed the sick and raised the dead (granting them a longer life on Earth). God can do the same today. We hear of people coming back to life after being pronounced dead. Perhaps you know of someone who lived happily many years after being told they had an incurable or terminal disease. The Bible tells us to pray for sick and suffering people. If believers become ill, they can call the elders of their church, and the elders will pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord (James 5:14). God promises to answer the prayers of those who pray with faith according to the Bible's teachings. If we recognize our guilt and ask God to forgive us, He will. Jesus will heal in this life or raise up to heaven those who pray with trust in Him, because He promised, "Those who believe in Me, even though they die, will live” (John 11:25). — L.G.
