BierGarten owner looks to spread craft beer knowledge

by Nick Trougakos Published: July 19, 2013

If you’re a regular follower of my blog, the name Freddy Lamport should be familiar to you. Lamport is the owner/operator of BierGarten Wine & Spirits in Jenks.

Of course, saying the BierGarten is all about wine and spirits is sort of missing the point. The BierGarten, after all, is more than likely the No. 1 beer-centric liquor store in Oklahoma.

Lamport, who is Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP) certified and is working toward a hard-to-earn beer Cicerone certification, makes it his mission to not only stock the biggest and most significant selection of beer available in the state, but to also be an expert on those products.

Lamport, who said he often finds himself inundated with inquiries from within the industry about what beers people should stock, is now looking to grow his business and spread some of the beer expertise he has gained over the years.

To accomplish this, he recently formed BierGarten Promotions, a fledgling craft beer consulting firm.

He described the venture like this:

“What I am trying to do is partner with bars and restaurants to help them with their beer selection and knowledge,” Lamport said. “We will use the BierGarten brand to ‘certify’ to the consumer that this is a recommended place to drink quality craft beers.

“We are also going to work with the owners/managers to educate the staff on the proper serving techniques, classic beer examples and a little history of the beers. It will be a partnership that both parties will benefit from and will help the craft beer business in Oklahoma grow.”

Lamport said he will also offer services to liquor store owners, brokers and wholesalers who are interested.
