Oklahoma State had to work hard for its few opportunities Thursday night.

And the ones they earned didn’t work out.

The No. 7-ranked Cowboys managed but five hits and never advanced a runner past second base, handcuffed by Texas pitching throughout in a 3-0 loss in the Big 12 Tournament at Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark.

“It was one of those nights where you have good at-bats against two really good pitchers,” said OSU coach Josh Holliday, “and when really good pitchers make good pitches and you take good at-bats, sometimes they win the battle.”

OSU, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, fell to 42-15 in dropping into a loser’s bracket Bedlam matchup against Oklahoma, set for 7 p.m. with elimination on the line Friday.

The 19th-ranked Longhorns, improving to 38-16, stacked two of their best arms against the Cowboys. Starter Dillon Peters went five innings, allowing four hits, before giving way to Parker French, who finished with four innings of one-hit relief.

That tandem filled the Nos. 1 and 2 starting slots against OSU for their regular-season series in Austin.

“So we faced two high-end pitchers,” Holliday said. “They played excellent defense and did enough on offense to get the win.

“Nothing to hang your head about.”

Before a crowd of 4,941 at The Brick, the Cowboys managed baserunners in seven of the nine innings, including the leadoff man in three of those. Twice runners were sacrificed into scoring position, only to be stranded. The final time, in the ninth, Zach Fish was wiped out on a double play.
