STILLWATER — Oklahoma State's Marcus Smart will start this basketball season just as he left off in 2012-13.
As the Big 12 Player of the Year.
After taking the conference's top honor as a true freshman last season, Smart earned every vote for Big 12 Preseason Player of the Year in a poll of the league's coaches.
Smart is the Big 12's top returning scorer, after posting 28 double-figure point performances and a 15.4 average in his debut season. He also set a conference freshman record with 99 steals, averaged 5.8 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game.
Smart was named National Freshman of the Year by several publications a year ago and has been a consensus first team All-American pick by national media outlets this preseason.
The only unanimous selection to the Preseason All-Big 12 Team, Smart is one of four Cowboys who received votes. Joining Smart on the first team is senior Markel Brown, while Le'Bryan Nash and Michael Cobbins earned honorable mention notice.
A tie in the voting created a six-man first team, with Baylor's Isaiah Austin and Cory Jefferson, Iowa State's Melvin Ejim and Kansas' Andrew Wiggins joining the Cowboys.
Wiggins was voted Preseason Freshman of the Year, while his KU teammate, Memphis transfer Tarik Black, was named Preseason Newcomer of the Year.
