I have fantastic readers. You already knew that. But here is more evidence.

The other day, when I mentioned in a blog about the remarkable percentage of points scored off foul shots for OU freshman Jordan Woodard, it got David Hudson to thinking. So the basketball fan did some research and sent me this message:

“You mentioned that Jordan Woodard is getting more than 50 percent of his points from the line. You said you’ve never seen something like that. You’re right, you haven’t — at least not in the Big 12 since 1997-98. That’s how far back the Play Index over at http://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/ goes.

“I pulled the top 500 season in the Big 12 since 1997-98, then added a few players from this year who hit a lot of free throws. Here are the leaders in FTM/points for an individual season:

1) Jordan Woodard – Oklahoma – 2013-14 – (95 / 188) – 51%

2) Byron Eaton – Oklahoma State – 2008-09 – (208 / 501) – 42%

3) Jean-Paul Olukemi – Oklahoma State – 2010-11 – (145 / 377) – 38%

4) Byron Eaton – Oklahoma State – 2007-08 – (141 / 378) – 37%

5) Cameron Ridley – Texas – 2013-14 – (63 / 169) – 37%

6) Isaiah Taylor – Texas – 2013-14 – (64 / 180) – 36%

7) Jeff Withey – Kansas – 2011-12 – (124 / 350) – 35%

8) Mike Singletary – Texas Tech – 2010-11 – (136 / 394) – 35%

9) Chris Mihm – Texas – 1998-99 – (149 / 437) – 34%

10) Leo Lyons – Missouri – 2008-09 – (182 / 539) – 34%

11) Sheldon McClellan – Texas – 2012-13 – (155 / 460) – 34%

12) Mike Singletary – Texas Tech – 2008-09 – (136 / 404) – 34%

13) David Hoskins – Kansas State – 2006-07 – (171 / 508) – 34%

14) Jaquay Walls – Colorado – 1998-99 – (129 / 385) – 34%

15) Marcus Smart – Oklahoma State – 2012-13 – (167 / 507) – 33%

16) Cory Higgins – Colorado – 2008-09 – (176 / 538) – 33%

17) Demarcus Minor – Baylor – 2000-01 – (154 / 471) – 33%

18) Kelly Thames – Missouri – 1997-98 – (155 / 475) – 33%

19) David Hoskins – Kansas State – 2005-06 – (119 / 367) – 32%

20) Martin Zeno – Texas Tech – 2007-08 – (160 / 497) – 32%

21) Mike Singletary – Texas Tech – 2009-10 – (169 / 525) – 32%

22) T.J. Ford – Texas – 2002-03 – (159 / 495) – 32%

23) Joseph Jones – Texas A&M – 2005-06 – (147 / 459) – 32%

24) Alec Burks – Colorado – 2010-11 – (249 / 779) – 32%

Fascinating. Now, it’s possible someone else could crack this list. The top 500 seasons doesn’t include everyone. It’s possible that Woodard wouldn’t make the cut of top 500 seasons. We’re talking about 12 (mostly) teams per year for 16-17 years. So that’s about 2 1/2 players per team. But either way, it’s remarkable.

Woodard is getting a bigger percentage of his points from the foul line than anyone in Big 12 history — by a wide margin.

I assume that percentage will go down. Woodard did not get to the line Saturday against Iowa State. Coaches will start strategizing against Woodard; play off him and daring him to shoot rather than giving up fouls on drives. So we’ll see how much it continues.

But the study is interesting from an historical perspective. Reminds you of what an effective player Byron Eaton was. A point guard who was a master at getting to the line. Two of the top four seasons in Big 12 history for percentage of points from the foul line.
