It was flip city on Saturday for viewers like myself who like to follow all the area college basketball teams. The hectic schedule had the Oklahoma women’s team tipping off at 12:30 p.m. on KAUT-43, the OU men’s team at 12:45 p.m. on KOCB-34 and the OSU men’s team at 1 on ESPN.

Another way to watch sports

It’s hardly the same viewing experience you’d get with a big screen TV, but ESPN360.com is serving sports fans by providing live coverage of more than 3,500 events a year on their computer.

That number includes a variety of Big 12 sports events, including 20 football games, 154 men’s basketball games and 13 women’s basketball games this school year.

Since relaunching in 2007, the network’s total usage by hours has increased 200 percent said Damon Phillips, network vice president.

Those viewers include fans who are watching out-of-market events not available on TV and those who are at work without access to a TV set.

"ESPN360 is a TV network that happens to deliver through a computer,” Phillips said. "It’s important for us to always deliver TV quality video and TV quality audio.”

The broadband network is available in 25 million homes, a 40 percent growth from 2007. In Oklahoma, the service is available to subscribers of AT&T and Pioneer and computers connected to a college campus or military base.

ESPN360 has the ability to deliver up to 12 simultaneous live events.

Flip ... flip ... flip.

Although the Big 12 tries to avoid such scheduling conflicts, OU athletic director Joe Castiglione and Big 12 associate commissioner Tim Allen say they’re inevitable.

"Naturally, it is our preference that the attentions of our fans never be divided, and honestly, that’s the preference of the Big 12, as well,” Castigilone said. "After all, the Big 12 is highly motivated to drive big viewer numbers to its televised games.
