Big 12 football: Mike Gundy says no quarterback announcement until the first game

Mike Gundy says he still will keep his quarterback selection a mystery until kickoff of the OSU-Mississippi State game on Aug. 31 in Houston.

Clint Chelf started the final five games for OSU last season and played well enough that Gundy said Chelf would go into spring practice the clear No. 1. But midway through spring practice, Gundy clammed up and said he no longer would talk about the quarterbacking.

Wes Lunt, who started four games as a true freshman last season before he was injured, has transferred to Illinois, leaving Chelf and J.W. Walsh as the experience quarterbacks.

“They’ll get equal reps in practice, even in games,” Gundy said, “because of our tempo. We expect to play very fast this year. We’ll work with both guys.”

Gundy said he wouldn’t announce a starter, in part because of the Mississippi State game. “We’ll need to use every advantage we have give ourselves an opportunity to win that game,” Gundy said.
