Kansas State running back Daniel Thomas made quite an impact in his first season in the conference. The junior college transfer was named the Big 12 Offensive Newcomer of the Year last fall, leading the league in rushing with 1,265 yards.
During Big 12 football media days, Thomas spoke with The Oklahoman about his standout junior year and his expectations for his senior season.
Did you expect to lead the league in rushing in your first year in the Big 12?
It was one of my goals, but I wasn't too sure what would happen. I just worked hard when I got there, and it took care of itself.
What does it mean to have been at the top of those standings?
It's a big goal. There are a lot of great running backs in the Big 12. You've got (Oklahoma running back DeMarco) Murray and all those guys. To be the leading rusher is a great feeling.
Have you seen the names that have topped the conference before, guys like Ricky Williams?
Cedric Benson, all those guys. Yeah, there's a lot of tradition of a lot of great running backs in the Big 12.
You're known as a punishing runner. Where does that come from?
I don't know. I guess I'm just a big guy, and I have very strong legs.
