Big 12 football: Sooners a clear No. 1

by Berry Tramel Published: September 29, 2013

The Big 12 finally got a signature non-conference victory and found a new conference favorite, all at the same time. OU’s 35-21 victory at Notre Dame stamped the Sooners as the Big 12′s best. Here are the conference rankings, based not on a projected finish but on how the teams have done so far:

1. Oklahoma (4-0, 1-0): Impressive win in South Bend. The Sooners still haven’t played a prolific offense, and maybe not even a good quarterback (sorry, Kolton Browning). But OU’s offense has answered all questions.

2. Texas Tech (4-0, 1-0): The unbeaten Red Raiders aren’t overly pretty, and they still don’t know who their quarterback will be, but that victory over TCU puts Tech ahead of much of the Big 12 pack.

3. Baylor (3-0, 0-0): The Bears haven’t been tested. But all the teams below Baylor have failed a test.

4. Texas (2-2, 1-0): The Longhorns lost two games, but give Texas credit. The ‘Horns played teams that can beat you. There is no glory in playing teams that can’t.

5. West Virginia (3-2, 1-1): The loss to OU is looking better and better. We’ll see if the win over OSU does the same.

6. OSU (3-1, 0-1): It wasn’t so much that West Virginia looked good; it was that the Cowboys looked so bad.

7. TCU (2-2, 0-1):  The close loss to LSU looks better and better. But the Horned Frogs don’t have a good win.

8. Iowa State (1-2, 0-0): Finally, a victory for the Cyclones, over Tulsa.

9. Kansas State (2-2, 0-1): Strange season. KSU’s best win so far is Louisianal-Lafayette, I guess. KSU’s best loss isn’t at Texas, it’s to North Dakota State.

10. Kansas (2-1, 0-0): When your best attribute is a narrow home win over Louisiana Tech that you were lucky to get, you’re not very good. Louisiana Tech is not good at all.
