Big 12: Kansas State's magical year

Kansas State leads the Big 12 baseball race with only weekend left in the season, and the Wildcats have a healthy lead. The only way KSU doesn’t win the conference is if OU sweeps three games from K-State. If KSU wins just one of three, it secures at least a tie for the title, with OSU or West Virginia needing to sweep the other to tie the ‘Cats in that case.

So what a school year for Kansas State. The Wildcats tied with OU for the Big 12 football title but beat the Sooners in Norman and thus earned the Fiesta Bowl bid, The Wildcats also tied Kansas for the Big 12 basketball championship. Now baseball. The only school to win Big 12 titles in football, basketball and baseball in the same season was Texas, 2005-06,

Phenomenal accomplishment for K-State, an athletic department that doesn’t always have the advantages of some of the Big 12 schools, be they economic, geographic or historic,

But KSU has hired good coaches, improved facilities and made the commitment necessary to compete. And it’s paid off with Big 12 trophies. Good for the Wildcats. Good for the Big 12.
