Big 12 may struggle to fill all of its bowl slots

The Big 12 has seven bowl slots. Good luck filling them all.

Four Big 12 teams already are bowl eligible, and 5-2 Texas can get there Saturday with a win over hapless Kansas.

But none of the other five Big 12 schools are more than halfway to the required six victories necessary for bowl eligibility.

Iowa State is one loss away (Saturday at Kansas State, for example) from being eliminated from bowl consideration. Kansas is two losses away, and the Jayhawks still play Texas, OSU and Kansas State.

The loser of the TCU-West Virginia game Saturday will have to win out to make a bowl. TCU finishes at Iowa State, at K-State and home against Baylor. West Virginia finishes with Texas, at Kansas and Iowa State.

“It's hitting hard now,” West Virginia nose tackle Shaq Rowell told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. “This week is a pivotal game for us. We have to win this week. I don't care if TCU is going to see this interview or not, but we have to beat these guys. They're just like us — 3-5, both lagging.

“Whoever wins this game is going to go bowling. Period, point blank. Whoever loses is not going to a bowl game.”

Kansas State is 3-4 and still has to play at Texas Tech and home against OU.

So while the Big 12 has five automatic bowl teams, it's quite possible that five is all the conference will get. Which means the Texas Bowl in Houston and the Pinstripe Bowl in the Bronx will be scrambling to fill their slots.
