Oklahoma will start the Big 12 Soccer Championships with a little momentum. The Sooners clinched the No. 4 seed Friday night with a 3-0 victory over Iowa State in the regular-season finale at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames.
OU (7-8-4 overall, 3-3-2 Big 12) will play fifth-seeded Texas (7-10-1, 4-4-0) at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blossom Stadium in San Antonio.
The Sooners received first-half goals from Annalisa Hall and Samantha Howell. That was more than enough for OU goalkeeper Kelsey Devonshire, who would make four saves for the game and notch her fourth shutout of the season. But Renae Cuellar added a team-best 12th of goal of the season in the second half.
TEXAS TECH TRIPS COWGIRLS
Texas Tech ended its six-match skid against Oklahoma State with a 2-0 victory Friday night in Big 12 soccer in Lubbock.
Janine Beckie scored both goals for the Red Raiders, who improved to 14-4-1 overall and 5-2-1 in the league. OSU fell to 11-5-3 and 1-4-3. The game decided the Cowgirls' seed in the Big 12 Championships next week in San Antonio. Oklahoma State is the No. 7 seed and will play No. 2 seed Baylor at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Blossom Stadium.
Beckie, a freshman, scored the first goal on an open net after OSU goalkeeper AD Franch dropped the ball on a high cross into the box by Morgan Johnson. Beckie scored again 15 minutes later, her 10th goal of the season, after zipping past an Oklahoma State defender and sending a shot inside the far post. Beckie almost had a hat trick, but Franch made a highlight-reel save on a 6-yard shot early in the match to keep the score 0-0.
