The Oklahoma men finished second at the Big 12 Track and Field Championships on Sunday, although the Sooners' 133 team points were the most in program history for the championship meet.

“I thought the men had their best meet of the season,” OU coach Martin Smith said. “We performed well enough to make it close and stay with it at the end. It's a good catalyst for the NCAAs coming up.”

The Sooners fell 13.5 points shy of champion Texas.

OU had two men's champions Sunday — Patrick Casey in the 1,500 meters and Tre Lathan in the 110-meter hurdles. Casey broke a seven-year-old Big 12 record with his first conference outdoor title. He won the 1,500 in a career-best 3 minutes, 40.04 seconds. Lathan won his first Big 12 championship finishing the 110 hurdles in 13.70 seconds. Kevin Schwab, a former Mustang High star, was the Sooners' other conference champ for the weekend. He won the 10,000-meter title on Friday.

The OU women finished fifth in the team standings. The Sooners had two league champs, Avione Allgood in the javelin and Tia Brooks in the shot.

“The ladies had a great weekend,” Smith said. “The women really stepped up, and this is something I really think they can build on.”

Oklahoma State finished seventh in the men's standings and 10th in the women's standings. Despite the last-place finish in the team race, the Cowgirls' Natalja Piliusina won a third consecutive 800-meter outdoor championship. She finished Sunday's race in 2:03.99, which was just .39 shy of a Big 12 meet record.

OSU's Kirubel Erassa won the men's 5,000 in 13:53.53. Teammates Girma Mecheso and Tom Farrell finished second and third, respectively.
