Big box stores to downsize for competition

Published: April 14, 2013

I and many friends reminisce about how much we enjoyed small towns in the past with their “dime stores,” delis in their drugstores, movie theaters, and “dry goods” stores. There are people who like to shop at the large stores, but large stores seem to be having problems; many people across the country complain that the workers seem unhappy and give poor service, shelves aren't adequately stocked, few checkout stations are open resulting in long lines, and other problems.

In our part of the country, I find only the complaint of the long lines valid; most of the workers here seem friendly and helpful. Nevertheless, I can shop online, or at convenience stores or at dollar stores with shorter lines, faster turn around, and competitive prices.

Walmart plans to open 115 smaller stores in 2013 while Dollar General plans to open 625 stores in 2013. Changes will occur and city officials and planners need to be aware of what's happening.
