Big crimes, small towns

Owen Canfield Published: July 12, 2013

Violent crime isn’t an issue reserved solely for Oklahoma’s two largest cities. Oklahoma City and Tulsa certainly have their share, but so do medium-sized and smaller cities. In fact, Ardmore’s violent crime rate is No. 1 in the state according to FBI statistics. Oklahoma Watch reports that Ardmore saw 405 violent crimes in 2011, which for the Carter County seat (population roughly 24,500) extrapolates to 1,650 per 100,000 residents. Tulsa (1,000 violent crimes per 100,000 residents) ranked second and Oklahoma City (871 per 100,000) was fifth. In between the two metros were Durant (992) and Ada (977). The FBI classifies violent crimes as rape, murder, aggravated assault and robbery.
