Blazers hockey: Big names were part of CHL history in OKC
The current Central Hockey League is of Double-A caliber, which is one step lower than the American Hockey League. Oklahoma City has been a member of the CHL in its current format since 1992 as minor-pro hockey returned from an eight-year hiatus.
The original CHL ran from 1963-84, and it was then a Triple-A level minor league. Oklahoma City was a member of the original CHL for 15 seasons. Gerry Cheevers, Glen Sather, Terry Crisp, Dino Ciccarelli and Harry Sinden were just a few of the notable NHL players, coaches or general managers whose early playing days included stops in Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City’s hockey teams were known as the Blazers when they were the top farm team of either the Boston Bruins or Toronto Maple Leafs. The franchise was renamed the Stars and took on affiliations with the Minnesota North Stars and Calgary Flames. A sagging economy played a major role in the Stars folding after the 1984 season.
