The library system participates annually in The Big Read, a community reading initiative through the National Endowment for the Arts.

Library officials narrowed choices for its 2011 reading program to five books. The finalists are "Fahrenheit 451” by Ray Bradbury, "A Farewell to Arms” by Ernest Hemingway, "The Joy Luck Club” by Amy Tan, a selection of stories and poems by Edgar Allan Poe and "The Things They Carried” by Tim O’Brien.

The six-week program will include many special events, activities and book discussions at each library branch. It will be the fifth year for the library system to participate in The Big Read.

Activities for the 2010 Big Read begin in March. "The Maltese Falcon” by Dashiell Hammett was selected as the focus of that event.

Other books that have been featured in previous Big Reads include "The Grapes of Wrath,” "Bless Me, Ultima” and "To Kill a Mockingbird.”
