MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. (AP) — Two large sharks have been spotted within 15 feet of surfers off the Southern California coast.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement Wednesday that one of its helicopters patrolling over Manhattan Beach spotted the sharks each about six feet long Tuesday. The surfers were warned via the helicopter's PA system and quickly paddled away.

Manhattan Beach lifeguard Terry Yamamoto tells City News Service that several sharks have been spotted recently but have been "pretty docile" so far. Lifeguards are monitoring waters from boats and the beach and a marine biologist was trying to determine what breed of sharks are appearing.

The Sheriff Department is warning beach goers to stay near shore, swim in groups and avoid being in the water in darkness or with bleeding wounds.
