BILBAO, Spain (AP) — Athletic Bilbao says it has rejected an offer from Manchester United for midfielder Ander Herrera.
Bilbao club president Josu Urrutia says "we have received an official offer from Manchester United (but) we don't have the goal of making money through the sale of our players."
Urrutia says Bilbao will only sell Herrera if he asks for a transfer and the buying club pays his buyout clause of 36 million euros ($47.6 million).
The 24-year-old Herrera stands out for his playmaking abilities. He has been a starter for Bilbao since joining from Real Zaragoza in 2011.
Bilbao is one of the few Spanish clubs in good financial health and is unlikely to choose to lose another key player after Javi Martinez and Fernando Llorente left over the past year.
