Clinton is taking an increasingly personal role in Obama's reelection effort, with these fundraisers coming on the heels of news that Obama's campaign strategists have begun turning to the former president for strategic advice.

The fundraisers also bring Obama closer to an old Clinton ally. McAuliffe, his host, co-chaired Clinton's reelection campaign in 1996 (though he failed to bring down President Bush as Democratic National Committee chairman in 2004). The Virginia Democrat attended a White House luncheon in honor of the Chinese vice president in January (McAuliffe's green car company recently paid $20 million to buy a Chinese electric car company).
