Billings leads Ark.-Pine Bluff past Alabama State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Justin Billings ran for 127 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries to help Arkansas-Pine Bluff beat Alabama State 24-21 on Thursday night.

Billings gave the Golden Lions (3-1, 2-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) a 24-14 lead with a 39-yard run at the end of the third quarter. He also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter.

Ben Anderson completed 17 of 30 passes for 220 yards and a touchdown, a 27-yarder to Ladarius Eckwood late in the second quarter. Dennis Jenkins ran for 82 yards on 19 carries, Eckwood finished with five catches for 92 yards, and Tyler Strickland made a 50-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Alabama State (2-2, 2-1) cut it to 24-21 with 3:19 left on Greg Jenkins' 17-yard pass to Justin Robinson. The Hornets got the ball back, but Bobby Wenzig's 44-yard field goal try was well right with 56 seconds to play.

Jenkins completed 16 of 32 passes for 187 yards and ran 18 times for 102 yards. Isaiah Crowell and Malcolm Cyrus had touchdown runs for the Hornets.
