Share “Blasts from the past”

Southmoore High School will play varsity football for the first time in September. Coach Chris Jensen is in charge of SaberCats, who will play in Class 6A next fall. Between now and then, he has a lot to do, from ordering equipment to conducting offseason workouts. Three veteran coaches in the Oklahoma City area were in a similar position as Jensen:

Norman North, opened in 1998
•First head coach: Dale Brown

•The result: Brown coached two years at Norman North, and his teams had a 3-17 record. Three head coaches and seven years later, the Timberwolves are a Class 6A power and will be a state title contender in 2008.

•Brown's advice to Jensen: "The most important thing is to do — as quickly as you can — is get your program going with your kids. Get to the kids as fast as you can.”

Westmoore, opened in 1988
•First head coach: Wayne Estes

•The result: Westmoore had success early under Estes, who remained at the school for seven years. The Jaguars made the big-school playoffs in their first year of existence, then finished as state runner-up four years later. Westmoore defeated big sister Moore the first six times they played.

•Estes' advice to Jensen: "Be patient with the kids.
