More thoughts about Butch Copelin October 01, 2007 | Comment on this article Leave a comment By Jason Kersey jkersey@oklahoman.com I wrote a story for Friday’s Oklahoman about a mentally handicapped football player from Newkirk named Kyle Copelin. But he prefers the nickname “Butch,” given to him by his grandpa when he was a baby. My first thought about this is: What an absolutely wonderful... Read More
Best QB in the state? No contest. September 30, 2007 By Matt Patterson mpatterson@oklahoman.com  I jumped on the Mark Ginther bandwagon after watching him play in a 3OT loss to Tulsa Washington last season. I liked his football smarts and poise.  The Jenks quarterback is a bit of a string bean, and doesn’t look at all menacing, but there is no... Read More
Coke bottle (Stigler) explodes... September 30, 2007 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com It’s not often that in one game, you can score nearly 700 percent more than what you did in four contests. But Friday night, the Stigler Panthers, nearly did just that. Stigler had only managed a mere seven points through four weeks while giving up 119. It’s... Read More
Magical night not surprising September 30, 2007 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com Maybe the number of touchdowns Bethel quarterback Jace Johnson threw is surprising, but the talent the senior has exuded throughout the last two years has had me believing this has always been possible. Johnson threw for 8 touchdowns and 336 yards in Bethel’s 54-14... Read More
Clarke narrows list to five September 29, 2007 by Brandon Chatmon bchatmon@oklahoman.com Verdigris star Rotnei Clarke has narrowed his list to five: Arkansas, Oral Roberts, Tulsa, Oklahoma State and Gonzaga. OSU recently got into the mix for Clarke and apparently he’s just as interested since they made his final five. I think OSU would be a great fit for... Read More
Week 5 State Area Picks... September 28, 2007 By Robert Przybylo, Jason Kersey and Zach West Reaching the midway point of the season, hopefully some things will clear up after tonight’s action. If Shawnee is not Robert’s Waterloo, then McLoud definitely is. Two straight weeks picking against the Redskins has registered two straight L’s. To say Robert... Read More
Duncan hands Western Heights its first loss September 28, 2007 by Brandon Chatmon bchatmon@oklahoman.com Duncan came to the metro area and, thanks to senior quarterback Trent Wilkins, handed Western Heights a 37-17 loss. Duncan was extremely impressive as the Demons went the entire game without punting the ball. They amassed 25 first downs and had 409 total yards in the... Read More

Fool me once, twice, ah, not a third time September 27, 2007 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com No excuses, Shawnee simply has me baffled right now. The biggest thing I’m not remembering is that Tucker Brown adds two dimensions to the Wolves’ team. No, not rushing and passing. With Brown at QB, it allows Brett Davis to really shine at his most natural... Read More
PC has tons of heart September 27, 2007 Brandon Chatmon bchatmon@oklahoman.com After covering Putnam City’s 17-14 win over Westmoore, one thing is clear to me now: Putnam City may not have a team stacked full of playmakers and top recruits, but they have a very good team. And the respond with a vengence when backed against a wall. As the game... Read More
Westmoore's Ralls did it all, except lead Jags to win September 27, 2007 by Brandon Chatmon bchatmon@oklahoman.com Westmoore running back Craig Ralls had an outstanding game with 19 carries for 126 yards and two touchdowns in the Jag’s 17-14 loss to Putnam City. But he was overshadowed by the Pirates’ late game heroics to pull out the win. Going against a defense which entered... Read More
Déjà vu for Broken Bow September 26, 2007 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com Broken Bow has only netted 13 points in the last two weeks. But the Savages do have a victory, one that was all too familiar to them. Five years ago, Broken Bow defeated Sallisaw 7-0. Last Friday, it was a repeat as Broken Bow outlasted them again 7-0. “It really... Read More
Carney blasts way into first softball regionals September 26, 2007 By Zach West zwest@oklahoman.com Carney head softball coach Kendra Barnes wasn’t sure what was more amazing – her team of just nine players winning districts for the first time ever, or the way in which it was done.  Last weekend, it was probably both. In an astounding series of high-scoring... Read More
As good as Blackmon and Owens? September 26, 2007 By Justin Harper jharper@oklahoman.com I wrote an article about Plainview wide receiver Justin Blackmon in Tuesday’s paper and had a breakout which compared Blackmon’s stats with that of Muskogee’s Jameel Owens, the state’s highest recruited player. Blackmon’s numbers were a tad better, but came against... Read More
Despite big loss, Newcastle defense is seen as a stength September 26, 2007 By Jason Kersey jkersey@oklahoman.com Newcastle lost last Friday at Clinton, 42-6, but senior quarterback and safety Trevor Evans said he still feels like the team has a great defense. “We have a really good defense,” Evans said. “We didn’t really show it last week, but our defense is stacked. Even... Read More
Who can beat the Chelsea Lady Dragons? September 26, 2007 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com It’s not meant to be a rhetorical question, but the way the Lady Dragons have played this year, it very well might be. Thirty-six games, 36 wins, 34 shutouts. It’s tough to beat that. Leading the charge has been senior pitcher Kasha Kolb. When people put up... Read More
From bad to worse in Claremore September 26, 2007 By Ray Martin rmartin@oklahoman.com Claremore started the season 2-0. They opened with an impressive win against cross-town rival Oologah. Things were looking up for the Zebras, who won only three games a year ago. Three weeks later, things aren’t so great in Claremore. In weeks three’s loss to Owasso,... Read More
Slowly creeping up in 2A September 26, 2007 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@Oklahoman.com Not much press has been written about Valliant. Frankly, coach Brett Jones doesn’t mind either way. The Bulldogs are off to a 4-0 start and are coming off a 45-18 victory over Coalgate. Competing in the same district as Davis, Valliant is not billed as the... Read More
Parham, DeGiusti to get some rest; PC-Westmoore showdown September 26, 2007 McGuinness is 4-0 but that doesn’t mean the Irish aren’t making adjustments. Fullback Joey DeGiusti will remain at that position, but will see less time at linebacker. Ditto for running back Kris Parham who also doubles as a cornerback. DeGiusti said the goal is to keep both players fresh. The pair still... Read More
