The Split: How schools have fared October 31, 2008 | Comment on this article Leave a comment By Justin Harper jharper@opubco.com   If you read the story in today’s section about the split of the Moore school district you may wonder how such splits affected other schools. Here is a look at how several large schools fared after a school district split, with their season record the year the new... Read More
Del City youth movement October 30, 2008 By Matt Patterson mpatterson@opubco.com Del City might not make the playoffs this season, but the Eagles are clearly a team that has what could be a bright future in the coming years. The Eagles core players on offense are all underclassmen. QB: Chazten Gonzalez (soph) has 11 touchdown passes and 1,300... Read More
Mustang has been tested October 30, 2008 By Matt Patterson mpatterson@opubco.com Playing in 6A-1 has afforded Mustang with plenty of challenges this year. The Broncos survived a tough game with Santa Fe earlier this year, giving them the upper hand in the district title race. Their win over pre-season No. 1 Norman North was a gut wrenching 30-29... Ponder had a huge quarter while Tettleton threw three INTs in the quarter. ESF takes over with 11:18 left in the game. 9:09 p.m. – After one of the longest first halves I’ve ever... Read More
Old rivalry resumes Friday October 30, 2008 By Jason Kersey jkersey@opubco.com Kingfisher and Fairview will play Friday night for the first time since 1969, but in the late 50s and 60s, the two teams played regularly. Our records go back to 1950, so if they played before then, we wouldn’t have that information. But within our records, Fairview leads... Read More
The Stooges: Week 9... October 30, 2008 Boneman was all set to rejoice at his 8-2 record, but then he looked at everyone else. That record last week was par for the course for The Stooges. Last week shows why Mr. Aber is not a stooge. While your three lovable stooges were either 8-2 or 9-1, Ryan fell back to the pack at 7-3. But with arguably the... Read More
Pauls Valley at Purcell -- series history October 30, 2008 By Jason Kersey jkersey@opubco.com Continuing my series history posts, I will look back at the long history in the series between Pauls Valley and Purcell, which are separated by about 35 miles on Interstate 35. A special thanks to Kelly Nemecek, who sent me the Pauls Valley-Purcell history. His records go... Read More
Wilson will start early at TU October 29, 2008 By Justin Harper jharper@opubco.com  I wrote about Cody Wilson in the preseason, but he doesn’t get the publicity of most of the Division-IA signees in the state because of playing in Class 2A. However, the Lincoln Christian linebacker is having an impressive year on and off the field. So here’s an... Read More
Destiny Christian up for the task... October 29, 2008 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com In essence, Destiny Christian is playing with house money Friday night against Corn Bible. The Wildcats enter undefeated at 8-0 and feature one of eight-man’s biggest names in RB Arthur Mahoney. It’s interesting what would have happened had Mahoney stayed with Moore.... Read More
High school kicking game struggling October 28, 2008 By Matt Patterson mpatterson@opubco.com  At first I thought it was me, but after nearly nine weeks of high school football it’s become clear that the already shaky high school kicking games have been just plain abysmal this season. Extra points cost Norman North in a loss to Mustang. Many of the city... Read More
Biggest week in Edmond football?? October 28, 2008 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Think about it like this. When a game between Deer Creek (6-2, 4-1) and Altus (5-3, 4-1) is pushed to the back page, you know you have a pretty good week. Edmond is the place to be Thursday and Friday. I don’t know which one I’m more geeked for, Edmond Santa Fe and... Read More
Shootin' the breeze... October 28, 2008 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Not everything a coach says can fit in the paper. Not because it’s profane or anything. It’s just, you know, sometimes, you can’t fit it in. In talking with both Lawton coach Randy Breeze and Southeast coach Michael Branch, the two delivered a couple of gems I did... Read More
Soaring Mustang not taking Del City lightly October 28, 2008 By Matt Patterson mpatterson@opubco.com   Mustang might be on the cusp of capturing the 6A-1 title, but the Broncos aren’t looking past Del City this week. The Eagles have won two in a row, including a stunning upset of Norman North.  “They will be ready to play us,” Mustang coach Ty... Read More
Ways to stop Heritage Hall? Lock the gates October 28, 2008 By Jason Kersey jkersey@opubco.com I posed this question to John Marshall coach Bruce Troxell: “What are some things you can do to slow down Heritage Hall’s offense?” Troxell’s response? “Lock the gates and don’t let them in,” he said. That seems about right. Heritage Hall hasn’t been... Read More
John Marshall wants to elevate play October 27, 2008 By Jason Kersey jkersey@opubco.com John Marshall (2-6 overall, 1-4 in District 2A-1) knows it is facing a daunting task on Thursday when it hosts Heritage Hall (8-0, 5-0), but coach Bruce Troxell said it is important for the development of his program. “These are the people that we want to play against,”... Del City on a roll? October 27, 2008 By Matt Patterson mpatterson@opubco.com Don’t look now but Del City has won their last two games — a stunning upset of Norman North and a blowout win over Moore this past Friday night. While the Eagles aren’t in the playoff hunt at 3-5, they can play the role of spoiler in their last two games. A win... Read More
McGuinness looking like a contender again October 27, 2008 By Jason Kersey jkersey@opubco.com McGuinness got off to a rough start to its 2008 season. Consecutive losses to Guthrie and Tulsa Bishop Kelley made people think that McGuinness’ dominance might be over. But now, the Irish have won six games in a row and look like a contender for their third straight Class... Read More
Mustang, not just about offense anymore October 27, 2008  By Matt Patterson mpatterson@opubco.com Since their Class 6A runner-up finish in 2005, Mustang has made a name for itself on offense with players like Matt Edmonds and Josh Cooper. But the Broncos have also played pretty good defense this year. Friday night’s 38-14 win over Putnam North is case in point... Read More
Bethany at Northeast -- series history October 26, 2008 By Jason Kersey jkersey@opubco.com Well, make that two first ever games. Bethany and Northeast play on Thursday, and that game will mark the schools’ first ever football meeting. Interesting…. we have at least two city area games this week that feature teams that are near each other and have never played. Read More
