Perfect Quartet video... March 03, 2009 | Comment on this article Leave a comment By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Here is the first state wrestling video. A look at the four four-time state champions. If you don’t know ‘em by now, don’t what to say. I think myself and my fellow chum Matt Patterson have said enough about Perry’s Ladd Rupp, Cushing’s Jarrod Patterson,... Read More
State wrestling lives up to hype... March 01, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com There is just something about wrestling and wrestlers in particular. They’re just a different breed. They wear their emotions on their sleeves like nobody else when it comes down to the state championship. That can lead to memorable moments like last night with Del... Read More
Day 1 Wrestling thoughts... February 28, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Friday started my three-week excursion to the good ol’ State Fair Arena. It’ll be my home away from home the next three weekends. My fellow chum Matt Patterson will keep you up-to-date on what’s up in Classes 5A and 6A while I got your backs for 3A and 4A. First... Between sessions thoughts... February 28, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Well, we made it. Eight mats have been trimmed down to four and all that’s left for the state wrestling championships are the finals. When I last left you, I was saying how Catoosa held a comfortable lead in 4A but that Tuttle could quickly turn things in its favor... Read More
How'd I do? February 24, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Well, you can’t make crazy predictions and then not eat your words, so that’s what I’m here to do. Had a couple of readers e-mail me about how difficult it was to watch the swimming events, and I appreciate the heads up. As a writer, I wasn’t really focused on... Read More
Day 2 Swimming thoughts... February 21, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com It’s nearly 8 on a Saturday night, but I am done. Unfortunately, I was not able to fit in all the coverage I was hoping for. So don’t fret if not all of the great outings today don’t make Sunday’s paper. There is still plenty more to come. Look for a story on the... Read More
Day 1 Swimming thoughts... February 20, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Here I was anticipating getting home around 8 or 9 at night. This is not too bad. I reserve the right to complain tomorrow with all the award ceremonies. Definitely not the same electricity without Samantha Woodward, but that doesn’t mean Your Friendly Neighborhood... Read More
State Swimming preview... February 19, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Well, tomorrow is Day 1 of the state swimming championships at the Aquatic Center at Oklahoma City Community College. Notice the new start time of 11 a.m. to accommodate the fact there is now a Class 5A and 6A. Won’t matter Friday as both classes will compete at... Read More
Just over a week away... February 10, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com It’s a different feeling heading into this year’s state swimming championships. For one, it could be an even longer two days with the Class 5A and 6A competitions (not that I mind). Also, there’s no Samantha Woodward to galvanize the weekend. But that doesn’t... Read More
Ikard tradition lives on at OU... February 04, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com The atmosphere for Bishop McGuinness tight end Gabe Ikard’s signing to Oklahoma was actually pretty tame compared to some of the other ones I’ve attended. Maybe it’s because of Ikard’s size and ability, that took away some of the shock that say a town like Dewar... Read More
Consider me done... January 25, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com That’s it. It is the end for me. I won’t see better basketball this year than I did in my two days at the Titan Classic at Carl Albert. Whether it was Del City making a statement against Union (though a tired squad) or Midwest City getting a little of that swagger... Read More
And then that happened... January 25, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com It was real tough to try to duplicate the atmosphere of the Titan Classic on Saturday after one of the most memorable days of basketball for me (personally) on Friday. Three overtime games, eight total OTs and one monumental struggle between two of the strongest powers... Read More
Well, if you like OT... January 24, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com The Boneman has entered his humbled abode here about 12:45 in the morning. You know, just a mere 13 hours after he left to watch basketball at the Carl Albert Titan Classic. What did I see? How about two double overtime games and one quadruple overtime game where the... Some swimming thoughts... January 19, 2009 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Hey, we STILL do exist. I’m “your man” in the pool. And as we get closer and closer to the state tournament, wanted to chime in on some things. - Torn on the 5A and 6A deal. Love it for the team aspect, but I get greedy, too. Swimmers like Lizzy Whitbeck of... Read More
Getting ready for awards week... December 19, 2008 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Hey, apologize for the lack of updates from your “beloved” high school staff. We’ve been busy working on postseason awards and happy to say we’re almost there. And for those wondering, here is how next week is going to shake out: Tuesday begins everything with... Read More
Perry wrestling tournament: A night of orange and black December 14, 2008 By Matt Patterson mpatterson@opubco.com PERRY –Oklahoma State coach John Smith made an appearance at  the Perry tournament finals Saturday night and for good reason. At least six future Cowboys were on the mat. One was Perry’s Ladd Rupp who easily won his 125 pound match by fall. And despite winning... Read More
Morrison 13, Okeene 9 - Class A final December 13, 2008 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com Now that was a hard-hitting game. Because I can, I elect to give the game’s MVP to Okeene LB Matt Benham. Watching the game with Ryan Aber and Jason Kersey, we agreed Benham was absolutely dominating. The program lists him at 190, say wha? There is no way Benham is that... Read More
The Stooges: Week 15... December 12, 2008 Only two games left, ladies and gents. Can you believe it? And yes, there is some drama within The Stooges. Boneman is guaranteed to finish last, his great playoff run notwithstanding. Jason is taking home the bronze, no doubt about that. But in a bitter battle to the end, Ryan and Ray still have first to be... Read More
It's The Boneman Championship... December 11, 2008 By Robert Przybylo BPrzybylo@opubco.com You have to agree the Boneman Championship is worth fighting for more than a gold ball. Why else would Heritage Hall and Chandler being playing so hard? All kidding aside, I feel like I’m choosing between two brothers Saturday with Heritage Hall and Chandler. I know... Read More
More quotes on Kenny Young December 05, 2008 By Jason Kersey jkersey@opubco.com Because of space constraints, I couldn’t fit everything I wanted to into my story about Bishop McGuinness coach Kenny Young, which ran in today’s paper. The first thing that I couldn’t fit in is the fact that Young coached in his 100th game last weekend, and I’m sure... Read More
