Halftime thoughts August 30, 2008 | Comment on this article Leave a comment By Scott Wright Apparently I spoke too soon. OSU can throw every pass to Dez Bryant and Brandon Pettigrew. Or at least it can try. Bryant and Pettigrew have four catches each as OSU holds a 15-0 halftime advantage. Bo and Beau, as in Bowling and Johnson, have two catches apiece and Keith Toston has one. Not... Read More
Jump balls galore August 30, 2008 Look familiar Cowboy fans? Mike Gundy is calling the same play that worked so well when he was calling for Josh Fields and Rashaun Woods. Now, it’s just Zac Robinson and Dez Bryant. – Asst. Read More
Offense stalls August 30, 2008 Offense settles for a Dan Bailey field goal after having 1st-and-goal from inside the 10. Don’t think the Cowboys have thrown a pass yet. – Asst. Read More
Good start in Seattle August 30, 2008 Cowboys off to good start in Seattle.  Forced a fumble (though didn’t recover) on first defensive series. Then Dez Bryant rolls off a nifty punt return giving the Pokes the ball deep in WSU territory. – Asst. Read More
Gameday: What to watch for August 30, 2008 By Scott Wright The clock is ticking toward kickoff at Qwest Field and here are a few things that could be worth keeping an eye on: – Running backs: Who gets the carries? Are they used situationally? How much does Kendall Hunter be used? That, I think, will be particularly interesting to watch. Only once last... Read More
Bailey again August 30, 2008 Another Dan Bailey field goal gives the Cowboys an 18-0 lead. – Asst. Read More
Defense for real? August 30, 2008 I understand it’s early, but the Cowboys defense looks much improved. They just registered their first sack I remember in quite a while. Granted it’s kind of a rum-dum Wazzu offense, but OSU looks faster and stronger than it has in several years. – Asst. Read More
FINAL: OSU 39, WSU 13 August 30, 2008 Good showing by the Cowboys in their opener. Now we’ll get to see if they can go into their Big 12 opener 4-0. No reason, after today’s showing, to think they won’t. Pick up a copy of Sunday’s edition of The Oklahoman for complete coverage from our team in Seattle. – Asst. Read More
Orie Lemon cramping August 30, 2008 OSU starting linebacker Orie Lemon was on the Qwest Field turf for a minute but it looks like it was just some lower-leg cramps. – Asst. Read More
OSU 10, WSU 0 August 30, 2008 Cowboys score on a Kendall Hunter run. Looks like the offense is shaking off the rust. Looked good on that last drive. Defense isnt’ looking too shabby either. Don’t think WSU’s gotten the ball into OSU territory. – Asst. Read More
sight seeing at qwest August 30, 2008 Hello from Seattle, where I just took a little self-guided tour of Qwest, going wherever my press pass would take me. Some notes of interest. - Coming in from some warmup stuff, all the players and some of the coaches filed by while I was standing in a hallway saying hello to Mike Holder. Holder got high... First-half, first-game observations August 30, 2008 Oklahoma State leads Washington State 15-0 at halftime in Seattle. Some early thoughts: - Between receiving, kick returns and (hopefully) some occasional rushing attempts, OSU sophomore receiver Dez Bryant needs to touch the ball 15-20 times a game. This won’t be Bryant’s last game on Qwest Field.... Read More

ESPN’s College Football GameDay begins at 8 a.m. out here, which helped whet the appetite for today’s Oklahoma State-Washington State contest, which starts at 12:30 locally. The WSU school flag,... Postgame thoughts August 30, 2008 By Scott Wright Oklahoma State was better in all three phases of the game in Saturday’s 39-13 win over Washington State. Here’s my breakdown of each: Offense: Good, but not great. Zac Robinson completed 74 percent of his passes and Kendall Hunter was stellar in the ground game. The only real struggle came... Read More
OSU 15, WSU 0 August 30, 2008 Another stall inside the red zone, but points nonetheless. Dan Bailey field goal makes it 15-0. OSU up two scores going into the half. – Asst. Read More

OSU 32, WSU 13 August 30, 2008 Robinson scores on a QB sneak up the middle. – Asst. Read More
Pregame thoughts August 28, 2008 By Scott Wright Sitting at home watching the first night of college football (during commercials of the Cubs-Phillies game) I got to thinking about Saturday’s OSU-Washington State game. I’ll pose the question to you that I’ve been pondering for the last three innings (btw, the Cubs just tied it up,... Read More

John Helsley grew up in Del City, reading all the newspapers and sports magazines he could get his hands on. And Saturday afternoons, when the Major League Game of the Week was on, he'd keep a scorecard for the game. So the sports appeal was was deep-rooted at an early age.

Mrs. Jackson, an English/Journalism teacher at Del City High, plucked him for the school paper, The Eagle Beacon, and John was hooked. While he detoured through a brief accounting career, John returned to college (Central Oklahoma) for a second degree and a second career that has seen him cover everything from the preps to the pros at The Oklahoman.

John lives in Edmond with his wife Roberta and two daughters, Sarah and Jillian, who are keeping the family tradition of cheering for the baseball team with the birds on the bat.
