On Tuesday night they — and a bunch of other OSU athletes — were cut off at the pass by a civic-minded soccer player. Yolanda Odenyo, the star of the soccer... Read More
OSU mid-week links October 01, 2008 Looks like there’s some concern about Michael Goodson’s rushing production on multiple levels at Texas A&M. The Cowboys have extended an offer to a defensive tackle out of Texas, Scout.com tells us. The Kansas City Star’s Blair Kerkhoff discusses the Big 12 Conference’s great start. And Oklahoma... OSU injury update September 30, 2008 By Scott Wright OSU receivers coach Trooper Taylor said last night that Artrell Woods is back healthy, so expect to see No. 83 on the field this weekend. Woods probably could have played last week against Troy, but the need wasn’t there. Still, it will be good to see the kid back on the field. There’s no more... Read More
Who still has their View-Master? September 30, 2008 By Scott Wright Remember the View-Master? The plastic thing that looked like a giant pair of binoculars that you put a round photo slide in and could see a 3-D picture? Click the lever on the side and see another picture. Click, another picture. Click, another picture. Mine was a Muppets View-Master.... Read More

The word on Wall September 27, 2008 ESPN.com wrote a profile about North Carolina prep point guard John Wall today, with a sidebar about possible college destinations (read it here). Wall talks about Baylor (where Dwon Clifton, the brother of his AAU coach was recently hired), Memphis, Kansas and NC State.  Unless I’m missing something, there... Read More
Pettigrew in uniform September 27, 2008 By Scott Wright Oklahoma State tight end Brandon Pettigrew is in uniform and went through pregame drills. But he did not appear to be moving at full speed. If I had to guess at this time, I’d say he won’t be playing. Read More
No Pettigrew and other thoughts September 27, 2008 Brandon Pettigrew isn’t playing on that bum ankle, relegated to spectator status. On that topic, Boone Pickens Stadium is definitely more filled than it was against Houston. No attendance announcement yet, but it looks like it could be in the neighborhood of the record, 51,458. Mike Gundy didn’t waste any... Read More
What if Pettigrew can’t play? September 26, 2008 By Scott Wright What if Brandon Pettigrew can’t play Saturday against Troy? Should Oklahoma State fans be concerned? Should they be happy that he won’t get injured worse in a non-conference game that the Cowboys probably can win without him anyway? Here’s my advice to the Poke faithful asking themselves... More animosity out of Troy September 25, 2008 By Scott Wright The Trojans aren’t holding back. This time it’s defensive end Brandon Lang, who will be starting in place of Kenny Mainor. Mainor suffered a torn ACL last week against Ohio State. I’m not sure what to think about all this animosity. It could be a good thing for OSU if the Cowboys can keep... Read More
“…when I lay my vengeance down upon thee.” September 23, 2008 By Scott Wright With all the talk about revenge this week, I can’t get that Samuel L. Jackson line from “Pulp Fiction” out of my head. “I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger…” I don’t know if there will be any great vengeance or furious anger in Stillwater Sunday,... Walk-ons coming soon September 23, 2008 From what I hear OSU coach Travis Ford is nearing a decision on his walk-ons, planning to whittle the list from five to three this week and involve them in practices. When they’re official we’ll be sure to introduce you. Read More
Friendlier foe? September 20, 2008 So given today’s results — Troy hanging with Ohio State early and A&M being unable to stop Miami — which upcoming opponent seems like the easier win for the Cowboys? -andrea cohen 2 Show / Hide Archive Comments The following comments are archived from the original publication of this post Read More
walk-on ramblings September 18, 2008 So I woke up veeeerrry early yesterday and went to walk-on tryouts at Gallagher-Iba. Wrote about it for yesterday’s paper, but here’s a little more of what went on. Now, a quick disclaimer: I have a huge soft spot for walk-ons. I just think it means so much to those guys, it’s cool to see how much they... Read More
uni thoughts? September 18, 2008 Chit-chatting with some OSU people today, we got to talking about basketball uniforms. Specifically, what color to wear on the road. The Cowboys have only worn orange on the road a couple times in the two seasons I’ve covered them, almost always opting for the black. The orange seems to be more of a... Read More
waiting on Teeng September 18, 2008 OklahomaState is still working out eligibility issues for 6-foot-10 transfer Teeng Akol, who has not yet been cleared by the NCAA. The school is waiting on results from a testing center, where Akol said he took an ACT in June. Akol’s presence is critical to the Cowboys, who are shorthanded in the post. Aside... Read More
another day, another hoops commit September 14, 2008 This time it’s junior college shooting guard Brad Reese, a shooting guard who blew everyone away at the recent Tulsa juco camp.  Still trying to get ahold of everyone, so look for more tomorrow. Read More
Kendall keeps on keeping on September 13, 2008 Ok, here’s the thing. You look at Kendall Hunter’s numbers very early in the second half (132 yards and counting) and assume the Missouri State defense is a complete mess. But for the most part the Bears have handled Beau Johnson and Ketih Toston just fine. Read More

John Helsley

OSU Reporter Sr.

John Helsley grew up in Del City, reading all the newspapers and sports magazines he could get his hands on. And Saturday afternoons, when the Major League Game of the Week was on, he'd keep a scorecard for the game. So the sports appeal was was deep-rooted at an early age.

Mrs. Jackson, an English/Journalism teacher at Del City High, plucked him for the school paper, The Eagle Beacon, and John was hooked. While he detoured through a brief accounting career, John returned to college (Central Oklahoma) for a second degree and a second career that has seen him cover everything from the preps to the pros at The Oklahoman.

John lives in Edmond with his wife Roberta and two daughters, Sarah and Jillian, who are keeping the family tradition of cheering for the baseball team with the birds on the bat.
