O-line was outstanding in Austin October 28, 2008 | Comment on this article Leave a comment By Scott Wright I anticipated Oklahoma State would be able to run the ball successfully against Texas. But I never expected 217 yards — 191 from the tailback spot — against one of the top defensive lines in the country. Brian Orakpo and Roy Miller have been dominating any offensive lineman that steps in... Read More

Taking on No. 1 October 23, 2008 By Scott Wright OSU hasn’t fared well against AP No. 1 teams, going 0-7 all-time. The closest the Cowboys have come to knocking off a No. 1 was a 14-10 loss to Nebraska in Stillwater in 1983. But this is also the first time OSU has played a No. 1 when it was also ranked in the top 10. For that reason, this... Read More
OSU-Texas a hot ticket October 23, 2008 By Scott Wright Tickets for Saturday’s OSU-Texas showdown are among the hottest tickets of the week, according to TicketsNow.com. Earlier in the week, prime seats for the game were selling for more than $550, with the cheapest available at $96. As of today, average ticket price was $231. Read More

Recruiting news, Stewart Mandel and other stuff October 16, 2008 By Scott Wright Sports Illustrated’s Stewart Mandel was asked this week about comments he made regarding Mike Gundy earlier this season, when he called OSU’s coach “certifiably nuts” and asked why a team coached by Gundy “should ever be taken seriously?” In case you missed the original, here it is.... That’s gonna leave (more than) a mark October 14, 2008 Watched some OSU basketball practice while writing about Damian Davis this afternoon. The most notable thing of the afternoon was Terrel Harris taking an Obi Muonelo elbow to the forehead. Let’s just say there was a lot of blood, and I imagine quite a few stitches. Not sure if he will be OK to play in the... Read More
Football news and notes October 13, 2008 By Scott Wright One of my favorite sights from the trip to Columbia, Mo., over the weekend came as we were waiting for players and coaches to emerge from the locker room for postgame interviews. One of the first coaches to come out was offensive line coach Joe Wickline, who kept on walking past all the... Read More
An interesting point … October 13, 2008 from Dan Shanoff (danshanoff.com) I will say this: Oklahoma State is getting screwed, and here’s why: They didn’t generate a single vote in the preseason poll, so they have had to overcome THAT all season long, which is why they are where they are — rather than at No. 4, which is where I have them. They... Read More
Pettigrew’s presence October 11, 2008 Rumors have been swirling about Brandon Pettigrew’s health. The tight end just came out to warm up, fully dressed. He’s out runnuing routes and he doesn’t look seriously slowed. We’ll keep you updated. Read More
Clock-watching in Columbia October 11, 2008 Bonjour from Columbia, Mo., where we’ve got just over two hours until kickoff. It’s an interesting atmosphere here … lots and lots of tailgating, lots of Chase Daniel jerseys. Given the multi-colored trees, it’s crazy that it’s so warm outside. Looks like fall but feels like summer. But I think by kick... Read More
Huddling Up October 11, 2008 Some action! It’s 5 p.m., OSU just arrived and the players, dressed in black sweats and orange polos, walked out onto the field and circled up between the 12 yardline and 22. Their arms are linked, heads are down, and I would wager that they’re praying (is that sacreligious, talking about gambling on... Read More
Not many Show-Me-Staters at OSU October 10, 2008 By Scott Wright OSU offensive lineman Andrew Lewis told a funny story the other day. At media day in August, players were grouped according to their home state for photos, but Lewis is the only player on the team from Missouri. “They made me get with the players from Oklahoma, because they didn’t want to... Middle of the pack October 07, 2008 The Big 12 men’s basketball preseason poll came out today, with Oklahoma State picked to finish sixth.  Oklahoma is picked first, followed by Texas, Baylor, Kansas, Texas A&M, OSU, Missouri, K-State, Nebraska, Tech, Iowa State and Colorado.  As far as the number of votes go, it’s very close at the... Some football tidbits October 07, 2008 By Scott Wright – With all that has been made about Missouri’s first-team offense not having a three-and-out yet this season, I was asked how many OSU and its extremely efficient first-team offense have had. The answer is three. Two against Washington State and one last week against Texas A&M. –... Read More
Your chance to be a part of OSU history… sort of October 06, 2008 By Scott Wright If you’ve got your credit card handy and would like to pretend that you played in the 1997 Alamo Bowl, now’s your chance. But you’ve got to hurry. Bidding on this 1997 OSU Alamo Bowl ring ends at about 4:34 p.m. today (Monday). Judging by other items for sale by this person, you... Read More

OSU Reporter Sr.

John Helsley grew up in Del City, reading all the newspapers and sports magazines he could get his hands on. And Saturday afternoons, when the Major League Game of the Week was on, he'd keep a scorecard for the game. So the sports appeal was was deep-rooted at an early age.

Mrs. Jackson, an English/Journalism teacher at Del City High, plucked him for the school paper, The Eagle Beacon, and John was hooked. While he detoured through a brief accounting career, John returned to college (Central Oklahoma) for a second degree and a second career that has seen him cover everything from the preps to the pros at The Oklahoman.

John lives in Edmond with his wife Roberta and two daughters, Sarah and Jillian, who are keeping the family tradition of cheering for the baseball team with the birds on the bat.
