  • Gundy competing with Miles for next defensive coordinator?

John Helsley | Published: Fri, Dec 19, 2008

By Scott Wright I found it interesting that Mike Gundy gave himself a timetable for the hiring of a defensive coordinator, saying he hopes to have it done about 10 days after the bowl game. In case you’re scoring at home, that’s Jan. 9. That tells me that he’s working through this...

  • Scratch one name off the list for the next DC

John Helsley | Published: Mon, Dec 8, 2008

By Scott Wright Former Clemson defensive coordinator Vic Koenning won’t be the next DC at Oklahoma State. The Owasso native landed on Bill Snyder’s new staff at Kansas State today. There are still plenty of good candidates available, but if OSU coach Mike Gundy is really set on waiting...

  • Ford: ‘This is not acceptable. This is not acceptable at all’

John Helsley | Published: Fri, Dec 5, 2008

By Andrea Cohen Staff writer OklahomaState missed starting center Ibrahima Thomas as Washington thumped the Cowboys 83-65 Thursday night. But perhaps even more significantly, the Cowboys missed effort and missed shots. Thomas, whose standing with the team is unclear, did not make the...

  • Hmm, that doesn’t sound quite right.

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Dec 4, 2008

OK, I can’t imagine how tough it must be to broadcast multiple games per week, and try to quickly learn enough about these guys to talk about them for a whole game. That said, I’ve gotta hit mute because these guys are killing me.  Time to turn on the radio. I know for a fact Hunziker...

  • No. 1 needs some shots

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Dec 4, 2008

Eaton needs to get Terrel Harris involved. Harris hasn’t taken a shot in about 8 minutes and that is not ideal.  Harris has done a much better job this season of not disappearing for long stretches, but watching this game you’re starting to wonder where he is. Now that James...

  • Guard rotation

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Dec 4, 2008

Washington is definitely trying extra-hard to rattle Keiton Page a little bit. After the freshman lost that last ball Ford practically ran down the bench to tell Eaton to get back in the game. I think we’re about to find out if Nick Sidorakis can fare any better. If you remember, Nick...

  • Big 12/Pac 10 Hardwood Series so far

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Dec 4, 2008

I’m watching the end of the UCLA at Texas game here waiting for the Oklahoma State game to start … We didn’t travel to cover the game in Seattle because of the combination of cost and the late game time (won’t be able to get a story in the paper before deadline) so I’m watching on TV...

  • 43-29 Washington at the half

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Dec 4, 2008

Some halftime thoughts: -Oklahoma State looks slow. Slow to loose balls, slow setting screens, slow on defense. -Ford mentioned during his halftime radio minute that OSU is struggling to set up its offense and basically playing one-on-one. “We’re not a one-on-one kind of team,” he...

  • Not the best day to face a big man like Brockman

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Dec 4, 2008

There really couldn’t be a much worse guy to face without your starting center. Brockman is a very large man, and he’s led this 7-0 run the Huskies are on at the moment. Sidenote: What the heck is going on with Eaton’s free throw shooting? He used to be automatic from the line — even...

  • OSU showing a little life midway through the half

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Dec 4, 2008

A little run for the Cowboys with an interesting lineup — Page, Sidorakis, Harris, Muonelo and Brown. Back-to-back Page field goals but Washington still leads by 16 with about eight minutes to play. Harris is doing a good job of being aggressive and getting to the free throw line, but (like...

  • Why Ibrahima Thomas’ departure would be a stunner

John Helsley | Published: Wed, Dec 3, 2008

I got a phone call early Tuesday evening, someone asking me what I knew about a player leaving the basketball team. I didn’t know much, so I started making phone calls. My assumption was that one of the guys who wasn’t getting much/any playing time had hit the road, and that wouldn’t have...

  • better shooting, more foul trouble

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Nov 27, 2008

The shootout is on! The beginning of the second half looks totally different, both teams less sloppy. But both teams continuing to drag themselves into foul trouble. Which is a bigger problem for OSU than Gonzaga, considering Ford would really prefer to just go 7, maybe 8 deep. Oh wow, and...

  • OSU up one …

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Nov 27, 2008

Considering that Byron Eaton is not playing well at all, this is going pretty well through about 12 minutes. Eaton seems to be throwing up some ill-advised shots and the turnovers are bad. Losing Terrel to early foul trouble hurts a ton, on offense and defense. On the bright side, Anthony...

  • Foul trouble

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Nov 27, 2008

Almost five minutes until the half and Ibrahima Thomas and Terrel Harris are on the bench with 3, Anthony Brown is down with two and James Anderson just picked up his second. Problematic. Malcoln Kirkland just replaced Brown.

  • Ice cold start in Orlando

John Helsley | Published: Thu, Nov 27, 2008

Yowza. We’re about five minutes into this thing and OSU’s only bucket is an Ibrahima Thomas 3. OSU has gotten some decent looks but also has a bunch of turnovers early on. ESPN’s Andy Katz said Travis Ford and Butch Pierre told him how well the Cowboys are picking up the system, and that...

  • Akol at home

John Helsley | Published: Wed, Nov 26, 2008

Oklahoma State center Teeng Akol did not make the trip to Orlando with the men’s basketball team. The 6-foot-11 post has not yet been declared eligible by the NCAA and thus was not able to travel with the team. Akol “validated” his ACT test last week and OSU is waiting for the NCAA...

OSU Reporter Sr.

John Helsley grew up in Del City, reading all the newspapers and sports magazines he could get his hands on. And Saturday afternoons, when the Major League Game of the Week was on, he'd keep a scorecard for the game. So the sports appeal was was deep-rooted at an early age.

Mrs. Jackson, an English/Journalism teacher at Del City High, plucked him for the school paper, The Eagle Beacon, and John was hooked. While he detoured through a brief accounting career, John returned to college (Central Oklahoma) for a second degree and a second career that has seen him cover everything from the preps to the pros at The Oklahoman.

John lives in Edmond with his wife Roberta and two daughters, Sarah and Jillian, who are keeping the family tradition of cheering for the baseball team with the birds on the bat.
