How much will Oklahoma State use backup QB J.W. Walsh against Savannah State? August 29, 2012 One of the most intriguing questions going into the 2012 season is how exactly–and how much–backup quarterback J.W. Walsh will be used in the Cowboys’ offense. Walsh lost the starting quarterback derby to Wes Lunt during the spring, but all indications have been that Walsh will still have a role because of... Read More
Alex Elkins’ favorite teammate to watch? Shaun Lewis August 29, 2012 I wrote about Oklahoma State’s linebackers for today’s paper–a deep group that returns all three starters and several young backups with plenty of speed, athleticism and potential. One of those starters back is, of course, Alex Elkins. But you could also put him in the “potential” category, because of... Read More

OSU Reporter Sr.

John Helsley grew up in Del City, reading all the newspapers and sports magazines he could get his hands on. And Saturday afternoons, when the Major League Game of the Week was on, he'd keep a scorecard for the game. So the sports appeal was was deep-rooted at an early age.

Mrs. Jackson, an English/Journalism teacher at Del City High, plucked him for the school paper, The Eagle Beacon, and John was hooked. While he detoured through a brief accounting career, John returned to college (Central Oklahoma) for a second degree and a second career that has seen him cover everything from the preps to the pros at The Oklahoman.

John lives in Edmond with his wife Roberta and two daughters, Sarah and Jillian, who are keeping the family tradition of cheering for the baseball team with the birds on the bat.
