May 01, 2009
Via Idolator, this clip shows a gentleman by the nom de web of Funkscribe taking “Superstition” apart track by track — who knows how he got the masters — and reveals a total of eight Clavinet tracks — eight! This is seriously geek stuff, but I’m endlessly amazed at how classic songs were created, and... Read More

Music Review: Various Artists, “Ben Folds Presents: University A Cappella”
April 29, 2009
Rating: 72
Cruising through YouTube, Ben Folds discovered that university a cappella groups seemed to gravitate to his songs. DVD Review: “Glass: A Portrait of Philip in Twelve Parts”

Common misperceptions abound with Philip Glass: that the man must be as esoteric as his work, and that his music is entirely minimalist. In fact, much of the composer’s output is classically structured, and director Scott Hicks (“Shine”) finds connections with other mediums and provides context... Read More

Music Review: Ida Maria, “Fortress ‘Round My Heart”

What sets Ida Maria Sivertsen and the band that bears her name apart from so many female punk-pop singers is her completely disarming vocal singularity: the Norwegian siren isn’t aping any of her forebears and she’s clearly having a blast on “Fortress ‘Round My Heart.” Witness her goofball,... Clearly, there’s a “buy-in” factor that is so crucial to enjoying “My Bloody Valentine 3D,” the 2009 remake of the 1981 slash-tastic psycho-killer thriller — viewers are either there to watch monstrously gory impalements and partial decapitations, or they are not. This is not even a... Read More

1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs, “Zero.” A perfectly majestic synth-rock anthem to herald Karen O and Co.’s stylistic evolution on It’s Blitz! Sure, there will be many people who will miss the old spastic and noisy caterwaul, doing that forever seems out of character for this band.

1. Lily Allen, “The Fear”
I tried resisting George’s brainwashing tactics as much as I could, but the last record finally turned me into a committed Lilliputian. Infectious melody, razor-sharp lyrics and loaded with attitude. What’s not to be entranced by?
