PAPILLION, Neb. (AP) — The Sarpy County Sports Commission will host a banquet and an official unveiling of a sculpture of Nebraska-born baseball great Bob Gibson.

The banquet is April 10 at Embassy Suites in LaVista, and the unveiling is the following day at Werner Park.

Creighton University artist-in-residence Littleton Alston was commissioned to design the sculpture, which depicts Gibson delivering a pitch. The project is being funded through private donations.

The 8-foot bronze sculpture will honor the Omaha native who pitched 17 seasons for the St. Louis Cardinals during his Hall of Fame career. Gibson has lived in Sarpy County for more than 30 years.

The statue will be located southwest of the main entrance to Werner Park, the home of the Omaha Storm Chasers.
