Firefighters discover body

Firefighters found a body inside a home after putting out a fire Friday morning. The fire was reported about 10 a.m. Friday at 709 E 11 St., Deputy Chief Dru Tisher said. Tisher said responding firefighters found smoke coming from the house. After the fire was extinguished, firefighters discovered the body and called police. The victim's identity was not released. Shawnee Police Chief Russell Frantz did not return repeated phone calls seeking information. Authorities said one person was taken into custody in the case, but did not identify the person.

Prison inmate is fatally stabbed

Corrections officials say an inmate at a southeast Oklahoma prison was stabbed to death by three other inmates. Mack Alford Correctional Center warden's assistant Trent Griffin said Deshawn Reed, 23, was pronounced dead shortly after the attack Thursday. Griffin said three inmates used homemade knives to attack Reed in a cell. The prison was on lockdown status until further notice, he said. The state Corrections Department's Internal Affairs Division is investigating the death. Reed had been serving a 22-year prison sentence for a first-degree manslaughter conviction out of Tulsa County. He was scheduled to be released from prison in 2032.
