Midwest City quarterback Greg Austin did just about everything right against Putnam City on Thursday night

Everything except block.

Austin, a junior quarterback, threw for two touchdowns and rushed for two more in the 56-7 football rout of the Pirates at Putnam City Stadium as Midwest City avoided any type of letdown following last week’s crucial District 6A-2 win over Edmond North.

But early in the third quarter, Austin handed off to James Flanders going to the right, where the sophomore running back was wrapped up behind the line of scrimmage. When Flanders broke free and spun back to the left, Austin headed upfield as a lead blocker.

As Flanders crossed the goal line on the 28-yard run, a flag was thrown.

"They called me for holding or a block in the back or something,” Austin said with a grin. "I was just trying to help get James in the end zone.”

In all other areas, Austin continues to develop with each game, adding another weapon to a team with a strong running game and a stout defense that allowed just 114 yards Thursday night.

"As time goes along, he’s getting more comfortable with what’s going on, and he’s getting a little more cerebral,” Midwest City coach Steve Huff said. "The athletic ability was there. It’s just a matter of being a quarterback. I’m proud of his progress.”

After early losses to a pair of good teams, Del City and Southmoore, Austin has the Bombers perfect through five district games.

"I’m still learning,” Austin said. "Being my first year starting, I’m relaxing and understanding the situations better.”

Austin ran the option smoothly to account for his two rushing TDs, and he completed 7-of-14 passes for 109 yards in a cold, stiff wind, hitting Cole Eddy for scoring strikes of 13 and 25 yards.
